So ... Fall ball, relaxed, ...etc etc ...

My primary partner and I are doing our Sunday wood bat league ... game's a blow-out, and in the relaxed atmosphere, we'll gather between innings a little more than usual for different reasons. (Different subject though )

So, between innings I approach him and he says ..."do you realize that you 'double-call' the close safe calls"? "Why do you do that?"

I told him, first of all (I just had a close one but didn't do this) "I didn't there??" He said, "I know, but it just got me thinking" .... I said ..."yep, ...I know I do, and I don't know why, must be sort of a sell tactic"

We laughed ...no biggie ......

What do YOU DO that's unique to you in one mechanic or the other ???

Caveat: There is no wrong answers, and this isn't mean to be a forum to criticize anyone either

On whackers anywhere, my verbal is "Yes Sir! He got him!"

On a close play I'll usually say no he's safe or yes he got em. But nothing more than that.

I have different reactions on picks. If there is no tag attempt I do nothing, if there is a lazy tag, I just show a slow safe, no verbal. If it is a real attempt and a tag, I will show safe and verbalize.

ditto. If it was close they get a verbal + mech. Very close they get emphatic verbal and hard mech.

I think I only double-call unusual 'Safe' calls - off the bag, bobble the ball, etc... Otherwise, it's a single call.

Oh - wait - I call the 1st out of a DP twice, too - sometimes. Call the out at 2B, turn, call the out at 1B and then re-iterate the out at 2B (unless the runner is already walking away)

I think that's it.

Not really a mechanic but before the now common practice of the BU heading for RF between innings we would meet near the plate. If I was still there when "balls in" was called, I would run down a few feet in foul territory down the first base line and when I reached first, jump up and spin and continue to my position backwards still running. Would only do this about once a game.

so you did this before oh 1970? (and actually that mechanic has probably been in place since before that but I dont have any first hand knowledge of it)

If someone hasn't been to a real clinic, or doesn't do HS ball , or primarily does local stuff .... umpires are going to meet between innings. Not saying it's right

Very relaxed called 3rd strike.

verbal = 3  - then a slow pull of the chain straight back

I never seem to vary this and my partners have commented on it before.

I always say "got em" instead of "out." called strike three, i say "strike three" And give my hammer mechanic then crank my chainsaw. Close safe call ill say "nope! He beat it! Safe!" I only signal once and hold it for a few extra seconds. Called strikes, my verbal and mechanic occur simultaneously a long, loud "STRIIIIIIKE!"

I'm like a few of you.  RARELY do i say just "out" or "safe".  It's usually, "NO! He's there!" or "GOT HIM!".  Routine play, i say nothing.  If it's SUPER close, i'll double signal.  Dropped fly ball in the outfield when i'm BU....I bet I look like a bird flying away, cause i signal about 3 or 4 times with a safe signal and a verbal "NO CATCH". Same on D3K's, except i tend to not say anything.....just multiple safe signals for no catch.  lmao.  wow......am i screwed up?  It's therapeutic to type this all out.

"Out" and "Safe" seem to work well for me 99% of the time.  That may just be me though.
