Tough to see, but in this screen capture, I don't think he's made a tag yet. Looks safe to me. I don't think this was an "expected" call, just a miss.

I don't think so. I don't think the ball beat him by that much that it would be an expected call.

Where are all the HD super slo-mo multiple angle replays when you need them?

I think it is a missed call due to angle and possibly distance. But, 1 out of 100 plays from this same angle and distance gets missed are still pretty good odds.

But had I been on the field making the call I would have got it right because I never miss a call!

The expected call on this play would be safe. I think he just missed it.

No, since the action is moving towards the HPU, it's much harder to determine the sequence of events as compared to when the action is moving across the umpire's field-of-vision.

As long as the umpire is not too close to the play, 1BLE IMHO is a much better place to be.

IOW, don't try to umpire as if made of granite--i.e., don't be a statue. React to the play as it develops. 1BLE/3BLE are merely starting points.

I can see where you think that.. but 1BLE is for collision plays and that really is getting fazed out.. take this 3BLX which he is and you get a great view....

I still screwed it up, I meant 1BL not 1BLE. So it would be between 1BL and 3BLE.

I disagree that 1BLE should not be used, I agree that not as much as it used to be taught, but it still has it's uses. 3BLE is not the end all of plate positions. It will be good for the majority of plays but it is not an absolute default.
