Quiet Swearing

Umpire-Empire locks topics which have not been active in the last year. The thread you are viewing hasn't been active in 4766 days so you will not be able to post. We do recommend you starting a new topic to find out what's new in the world of umpiring.

Question

Posted

I should probably post this in the ejection forum but I don't feel like registering...

What do you use as a guideline for ejecting a coach if he comes up to discuss a call and swears so probably only you can hear it? I'm talking HS varsity or American Legion baseball. Something like "You're going to call that fu----- bullsh-- now?" or "you've been fu----- terrible all day." Do you give a warning about language or would you have an automatic dump?

I dont work HS so I can't say for sure but I believe the FED (High School) rule set has a gag rule regarding profanity. Regardless hes gone for the second comment no matter what.

I don't care how quiet the coach is, if he uses those words he's gone and I mean the words "You're" and "you've" unless they are accompanied by sweet nothings like "you're the best umpire I have ever seen." Certainly not the case in the post.

John,

First one, I'll ask him what his beef is.

Second one, he's getting dumped immediately.

Difference is, in the first he's talking about the call - or, who knows, the rule.

In the second, he got personal.

As long as he's not grandstanding, and noone can hear his words he can pretty much use any words in his vocabulary.

Swearing is going to be dependent on many things, to include:

1) Level of ball

2) Volume

3) Context

4) Local culture

I would advise you to seek out a trusted senior umpire in your area, if possible, and see what s/he has to say. Other than that, only experience is going to teach you where to draw the line.

Very true. Also maybe gravity of the situation.

To a certain degree I think we all have our personal level of tolerance but if it deteriorates into demonstrating, showing you up or being personal he's got to go no matter what.

"You're here for one GD reason, to make $" Now, he's gone. Implies I have no professional integrity. It's a statement about me personally.

I respect these lines. I would definitely weigh the situation/gravity of the game/level of play. Higher levels, important games, closeness of the play, etc. While I've never had a coach go to these extremes, a simple f bomb in conversation between men is ok with me, so long as it's just he and I in earshot.

Along the same lines as saying we opened the zone becasue we're ready to go, IMO

In HS, they want it kept pretty clean. If it's a conversation between me and a HC and he drops an F-bomb here or there and only I can hear it, I'll probably let him stick around. Player, not so much. In college, it's more leeway with the HC since his actual job is to win games and fight for his players. However, anything personal or questioning my integrity or something like that is an automatic ejection.

You'd toss a college coach simply for swearing?

Not to mention, the standard you use is unreasonable and unrealistic.

No, I wouldn't toss a college coach for simply swearing. I said I EXPECT the same language I would use with him. I don't often get it though.

And yes, we would be in a lot of trouble if we swore a a coach.

And the OP was talking about HS or Legion ball. I stand by my statement. GONE.

Context is the key in these situations. In #1, if it's HS or Legion, I probabaly know the guy since I've probably had some of his games before. So if he comes out (and they have) saying "You're making that f%ck*ng call NOW??, Thata's horsesh!t" and it's not loud enough to get to the stands, I'll walk around him so he's facing the plate/stands and I've got my back to everybody and I'll let him know that - yes I'm making that f%ck*ng call NOW! And you can think it's horsesh!t all you want. Anything esle you'd like to discuss?

In #2 - he's gone before he gets to "all day"

High School or Legion, I am sending this potty mouth packing. He used the wrong word with me. He used the "YOU" word in improper context to my sensitive ears.

F$ck yeah. He's coming out swearing at me. I thought I made clear that I probably have some sort of relationship with the guy - that I've officated pror games, etc - and if that's the case then we're probably comfortable enough with each other that it's going to be a give and take situation. Having said that, I'm not going on a blue streak where I rip him a new a$$hole. I'll use the words he used to me. And I'll never get personal with him. If he doesn't like it I'll give him my assignor's number.

Now if it's someone I don't know at all, I probably won't swear right back at him. I'll let him know that if he wants to use that kind of language, it's coming right back at him and if he doesn't like it, he can stand in the parking lot and swear out his a$$hole all he wants.

It's not rocket science.

I would never swear at a coach, but then again I only work up to Middle School so I wouldnt take it either.

I do MS as well. I've never had one come out swearing at me, and if I did I'd dump him. Swearing at the umpire in MS? Really dude? You're gone.

Back to the OP -- What do you use as a guideline for ejecting a coach if he comes up to discuss a call and swears so probably only you can hear it? I'm talking HS varsity or American Legion baseball. Something like "You're going to call that fu----- bullsh-- now?" or "you've been fu----- terrible all day." Do you give a warning about language or would you have an automatic dump?

I'm going to "chime in" with my opinion (you know what they say about opinions).

I work/have worked everything from small college (Div 2 & 3) down to 12U including high school, AL, BR, Pony, and etc. (when I have time - we play year round here in AZ). At no level would I allow either of these senarios to go unpunished in one of my games. Say something like that to me and you are on your way to the locker room (or parking lot depending).

Also, I never curse at a manager/coach. Usually I just stand there and let them act like an idiot then I make them go "bye-bye".

If you don't eject him for the swearing, eject him for the PERSONAL ATTACK (usually starts with the word "you"). NO WARNING.
