Name of a equipment maker/seller. I have a "smitty" shirt.

I know that. It's also used to describe certain umpires, and I was wondering what it meant in that context.

It is generally used to describe someone who does something that is pretty much taboo. For example, wearing ball bags while calling the bases, wearing your cap backwards while working the plate, having one of those terrible ball bags with the pouches on the outside for your indicator and brush, wearing steel toe boots instead of plate shoes, things like this. Get where I'm going?

Pony,

JamesC is pretty much on the right track, but there's another important connotation of the word.

It's not just someone who does things improperly, it's someone with many years "experience" who is still making "rookie" mistakes and is generally impervious to changing his ways.

I went back to the park where I started umpiring to watch my nephew play. The UIC was weariing khaki shorts, black polo shirt, white ankle socks, grey nb cross trainers, gold necklace, rings, gold bracelet, and not hat. I laughed out loud. HP was wearing grey walmart pants, black polo, white nikes, no hat. They looked RIDICULOUS! Turns out theyre league issue shirts, but the reat is whatever you feel like wearing. I haven't called there in years, and forgot how smitty they are. I don't think I was smitty back then, just uneducated and inexperienced. Soon as I broke away, I learned pretty quickly what an umpire is/isn't. At that point, I wasn't.

welpe and I have had this discussion before on other sites...and I went back and found it....."in a conversation I had with Welpe, its a good thing there are no photos of me umpiring in rural Georgia in the "80s......my adjustable hat, polyester coaches shorts and t-shirt (all association issued) would be a howl for all of you......

I therefore claim I am an acceptable judge of what is smitty.......since clearly I was one..... icon_confused.gif " from abua in 2008"

I do have two definitions.......the one who doesnt know better and the one who does and refuses to change.....of course the one preferable is the one who doesnt know better and can be changed with just some direction and positive role modeling...

HA! there are no new questions are there?..........lol.......

From what I understand our friend Carl Childress originated it.

I think I remember him saying that a few times, hehe. Papa Carl actually taught me the art back in the early nineties. Umpiring, that is, not being a Smitty.

So is there a name for the umpire that does all the proper things regarding dress, technique, mechanics, and knows the rules but constantly blows call, has an inconsistent strike zone, and his game management results in ejections constantly?

I came across that conversation the other day, Stan. :)

I had some good training starting out but still had my fair share of Smittyisms that were shed as soon as I learned that they were. Loudly proclaiming foul balls on tips back to the screen? Yeah, that was me. Fortunately I at least dressed the part and always wore my hat correctly (even if it were the LL issue adjustable one!).

Smitty's come in two flavors, ignorant that they're doing it wrong and insistent that they don't care. I'll take the former over the latter any time.

I've seen the word "smitty" used a lot on these forums. What does it mean?

Ask Trout. He is one of them. 😄

I was trained by this park ranger guy out of Florida. Can't remember his name. Everyone called him Ranger Smitty.

Was this at Jellystone Park? Were there pick-a-nick baskets involved?
