My daughter is in the 8th grade and was arguing with a boy in her class. She was defending her friend about something and during the argument, the boy says, "Oh yeah, well your Dad is a terrible umpire!" My daughter laughed and told him to flush it. When she told me the story, I was trying to figure out if I knew the kid and after she told me the team he plays on, it dawned on me that he was on a LL Juniors team and I made two unpopular, but correct, calls against them.

I was U1 on a 4 man crew and there were two plays where F3 had to jump to catch the throw from the infield. When they were on offense, F3 landed back on the bag before the BR got there and when they were on defense, the BR touched the bag while their F3 was in the air. No question in my mind about either call, but their team didn't like the result either time. U2 also called interference on their R1 on a ball hit to F4 that they were bitter about (they didn't know the rule - big surprise). The funny thing is that they were down 4-2 going into the 7th and scored 4 runs to win it.

My daughter caught a little flack in jr. high when I umpired her classmates summer ball games.....but when she got to HS, I blocked her HS from my schedule...not worth the trouble

"Oh yeah, well your Dad is a terrible umpire!"

Proper response:

"I heard my dad say your mom is a terrible ####!" (use your imagination)

My daughter's in high school, and she's only had one occasion where my umpiring came up. Turns out her varsity tennis coach coaches a travel team in the area. When the coach saw my daughter's name, he said, "Your dad's a real good umpire". :wow::D She said thank you, I'll tell him you said that.. Worked out pretty good as the coach told the AD about me, and it's lead to a few more game assignments for me. He's one of the few AD's left that doesn't use arbiter and still assigns his own games.

Back when I was a kid ( a couple of years ago.LOL) the hot one was " Your mama wears combat boots". These days, with a lot of women in the armed forces, that may very well be true.

I've umped my younger brother's games and all his friends. Luckily, I've never had any issues with any of them and they sometimes ask me if I'm umping them again soon.
