FED game today, on the bases for two teams that couldn't hit me from three feet with a shotgun. At least the game was only 1:25.

R1, count doesn't matter. F1 comes set and tries to freeze the Batter. Batter then steps out with both feet, and F1's pitcher yells "pitch it!" As you can assume the pitch is right down the middle for a strike.

I have worked HS BB for a long time, and I had never seen this play, However since I do happen to have my rule and case book under my pillow at night to learn by osmosis :meditation: , I know what I would do in this situation.

My questions are these:

1. Have you ever had this happen to you?

2. what did you call?

3. what is the correct call?

Inquring minds want to know.... :BD:

1. Yes.

2. Strike.

3. Strike.... or a warning that if the batter does that again without requesting and being granted time, a strike will be called whether the ball is pitched or not.

I don't have my book handy, but I think this falls under one of the points of emphasis this year (7.1.3?) My #2 happened when the coach kept yelling for his batters to "Step out!" just after the pitcher came set. I warned him, 2 batters later he did it again. I said, "Batter. Please get back in the box." Batter looked at me, then back to his coach. "Strike". The coach looked surprised, but didn't say a word. After the next pitch, he called out, "Call time, and step out if Blue gives you time."

Better idea...from a game-management perspective.

DAB1 (that would be dumbass batter #1) steps out with both feet.

Call "Time."

He does it again, get the strike for him stepping out, and the automatic strike for the ball pitched.

To go back to the OP, either you didn't nip this in the bud the time before, or the dumbass deserves both strikes. If someone has the time to yell "Pitch it," you have had time to take action, which means that the batter is not the dumbass.

Here in WA it was in both the online clinic and online test. Thusly we have decided that it is now a POE and we are calling it.

Just a question - why would you call time if no one asks for it? Seems like "nipping this in the bud" is calling the strike the first time it happens. Just trying to understand your perspective on this as 7-3.1f says the batter can leave the box when either team asks for and is granted time.

If someone steps out with both feet Im either granting time and telling the batter to get the eff back in the box or Im calling the penalty strike depending on what else has happened during the game. Im not getting a strike on the both the pitch and the stepping out by using case 5-2-1 Situation A as a reference.

Shame that conflicts directly with 6.2.4 Situation I. I'm thinking that one of these is a relic the FED needs to clean up, like they finally did the accidental appeal case not that long ago.

I have a quick and easy method for solving the many problems with the FED rule book:

Oh, I wish I could of done that for years. In fact, I may bring my old rule books for kindling next time I have a bonfire.

I would tell the batter to step back in the box. You give him a chance, but if he does not call time pitcher gets a strike. They will learn fast after to call time.
