Fake Nike Mask on Ebay.

The auction ended on October 7. In the question on October 4 it was clearly stated that it was a Wilson mask with Nike pads. At that time the current bid was at $100. After that the guys bidding on it clearly knew what they were getting and chose to pay $355 for it. He wasn't exactly truthful when the auction started. But the bidders obviously knew what they were bidding on and thought it was a fair price.

Without researching it myself, I wonder if the bidders even read the updated information. Most likely, they bid on it once, then kept bidding when their watchlist told them they weren't the high bidder.

I agree. There is no way they read the question. But when you bid so much money they need to be more aware what they are bidding on. Don't feel sorry for the winner.

I checked out the bid history. The two guys who were bidding on it at the end placed their first bid on the last day. The question was there on October 4 and they didn't bid until October 7.

The shipping charge was $19.99. To ship the mask via UPS from Rhode Island to California costs over $15. Then you have to add in the price of a box, the price of the gas he needs to drive to the UPS store. The winner could live closer to the seller so the shipping charges could be a little less but that's how a fixed shipping cost works.

You are talking about a USPS flat rate box. If you were paying attention I was talking about UPS. The prices are different. You may understand how shipping works but you don't understand that there is more than one way to ship something.

Also Ump-Attire is a business. They most likely receive a discount as they ship many packages every day. What they pay for shipping has nothing to do with what a normal guy on ebay pays.

Sorry Kevin, but you are incorrect on this one.

First, the seller didn't "charge" anyone anything. Two guys duked it out in an auction and it drove the price way over "market" -this is ebay, it happens. YES-his title mislead. BUT-in the description it said it was a Wilson frame and also there was the Q&A portion if someone wanted to be double sure. Not to mention that it did not look like a Nike frame to the trained eye.

Obviously the title was crafted to lead "those interested in a Nike mask" to a similar offering and then disclosed in the description what it actually was. Maybe two guys thought it was as close as they would ever get to owning a NIke mask OR it was close enough for them since authentic Nike masks can go for well over $500, more than they could afford.

I know this part of the forum is specific to gear, and you are a self-proclaimed gear junkie, but I doubt that makes it your job to "take care of him" based on the items he sells on ebay, its not like he advertised it on this site.

I get that it p*sses you off to no end- not just this auction but he whole concept of Nike masks and their scarcity and that you disapprove of many reasons people have for wanting one (jock sniffing, throwing money away, etc)-it irks you, we all get it, but for goodness sake let it go man.

In the end this was an auction you had NOTHING to do with, you didn't bid, you weren't even interested in the product, so why not just let it go? Its not your responsibility to look after the "poor sap" who bought it.

Who exactly did he exploit? He had a product, put it up for auction, and let the bidders decide what a fair price would be. You just seem to be mad that Nike pads increase the value of the mask by around $200.

He should have changed the title of his ad once it was confirmed that the frame was not a Nike. True, the small print, if read, pointed that out, but leaving the ad as it was was deceptive.

He could have stopped the auction at any point, but chose not to.

If I place an ad for an orginal work of Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn, and then later get schooled that my painting was actually scribble by Larry Rembrandt of Flatbush, but leave my orginal title up, would that not be a bit unfair?

I got duped on eBay a while back by an umpire who is still in MiLB and worked call-up games this year. Sold me two pair of used polywools that were junk. They were unraveled at the hem, had stains on them, and were ready to be thrown in the trash. It was my own fault for not sending them back the day I got them.

Yes, I did, but my point was that it was my fault for not asking exactly what condition they were in, and not sending them back the day I got them.

I get all the "brotherhood" stuff about the mask, but it's a silly mask on eBay. Stuff goes for way more than it's worth every day on there. If you want to spend time getting worked up about it and sending messages to the seller, go for it. It is low to try and trick buyers into thinking they are getting a Nike mask, but the buyers are responsible as well. The day this thread started, I went to the eBay listing and it said it was a Wilson frame with Nike pads. Can't get much clearer than that.
