I wear an All-Star I-Bar facemask. I have two problems with wearing my sunglasses under it. A. they don't fit comfortably (Oakley Radars with Shield lenses, so they stick out too far and extend down too far), and B. I'm paranoid of taking a shot and having them break. However, my eyes get very sensitive to sun. Does anyone have any experience with mask sun shields? Where can I get one cheap? Are there any cons to wearing one?

Back when I wore a face mask I had a visor and I too have sensitive eyes. It helped, but it's no substitute for shades.

Maybe your glasses just aren't right for you mask?

I wear 8 stitch hats, so the sun shield only keeps the heat off the bill of my cap, and does nothing for my vision. I do think it's bit cooler, both in temperature and looks.

Most local sporting goods stores in my area stock them. Find a Markquart, if you can. They're just better looking than the others.

.

agree 100% ......I have sun shields on both of my masks and I do believe they keep some heat off of me, but all in all, they are no replacement for sunglasses.....

Not a lot of pros.....but no cons either....

I also love my Oakley Sunglasses but I do not wear them behind the plate.

Go to Walmart or a Bass Pro Shop and get a pair of Fishing Sunglasses for about $14. The price makes the expendable and they work fine.

As I wear contacts, I also wear Winchester Yellow Tinted shooting glasses for night games or overcast days. They prevent the face full and eye full of dirt from a dirty F2s mitt when he catches a pitch right in front of your face.

I also wear a 8 stitch cap like Brian. :smachhead:

No, he's Kyle - I'm Brian.

And I wear 6 stitch hats only. :)

Thanks a lot guys :2cents:. I'm going to pick up a shield and some cheapos and try them both out this weekend...I'm leaning toward the shield, I think the shades will be too much of a pain when I start to sweat during the games and have to take off the mask, hat, and shades. But I'll definitely give 'em a shot. Semper Fi, do the shooter's glasses help at all when it comes to overall vision in the low-light conditions?

I have shields on both of my masks and can't live without them. I have blue eyes which are really light sensitive and it helps tremendously. I've tried sunglasses and found I don't really need them because most day games the sun is above you at an angle and not directly at you. If the sun is staring you in the face you are obviously in a pitcher's park because that's right in the batter's face also and most parks aren't designed that way. I'm a 6 and 4 stitch guy for my plate hat. God bless you. How do you get your mask off without that 8 stitch popping off? All that can do that with an 8 stitch have a gift.

I say find a pair of glasses that fits better under your mask. I used to wear a pair of Radars under my mask and never had a problem with them. I have a few other pairs of Oakleys I rotate around just kind of depending on what I'm feeling and the lighting conditions, and they never have caused me any problems behind the plate. As far as sun-shields they won't help with the sun very much if at all because your bill is going to cover that part of your mask anyway. They do however help a great deal with heat and because of that I use one, and I just tend to like the look of it as well. A few pairs of Oakleys I would say to give a try are the older half jackets or the new half jacket 2.0s, the M-frames or flak jackets. It might cost you a little extra money to shell out for a second pair of glasses but then again it's a tax write off and most of the all black Oakleys especially the older models aren't that pricey. If there is an Oakley outlet by you try going in there and trying on a few pair, don't be afraid to take your mask and plate hat in either. It might look a little odd but it will be worth it.

Last summer I started wearing Oakley flak jacket XLJ glasses.  I like them on the bases and they also fit well under my mask.  I have been searching this winter for a solution to low light and night games.  I was searching EBAY and came across a pair of XLJ's with amber lenses, this will be my solution for those overcast games, picked them up for about $50.  There is also a company on EBAY selling transition lenses for the XLJ's (this was discusses in another topic on the forum).  These will be great for the games that start in the evening and finish after dark.  I also like wearing glasses on the plate to keep the dusk and dirt out of my eyes.

Our HS season is in the fall, so at the beginning of the season we are usually done around dusk, as the season goes on with a JV/Varsity DH we usually start the Varsity game after dark.  Thus the transition lense will be great for this time of year.

don't XLJ's have replaceable lenses? Why not just get lenses for the light conditions desired?

That's good advice. Everybody has a different shaped head/face, and we have different frames and pads. Lots of varibles, and what works for me may not for you. There is no single solution.

I was not real clear with my explanation.  I was wanting a second pair to wear on the field and keep one for everyday wearing.  Yes the lenses can be changed, which is what I liked about them.

I wear prescription glasses with transition lenses and 6 or 8 stich hats. I never saw the need for the sun shields. Sent from my C771 using Tapatalk 2

My reason for the sun shade is not optics, but heat. It reflectls the sun off the bill of my hat, keeping things cooler inside my mask. Honestly, I only see a little of the edges of my shield. Not enough to make any visible difference.
