It's too engrained in society that heckling is a part of the game. I'll admit that I was very bad about it before I started umpiring. Once I realized how most umpires are right most of the time (and got heckled myself plenty), I backed off. Occasionally I'll still say something from time to time and I'm trying to watch that too (I find it hard not to say something when the top of a HS varsity strike zone is at the shoulders).

I for one won't tollerate any foul mouths on my team. If I know a kid has a history of it, I won't even draft him. I also, at the beginning of the season before the first practice schedule a parents/players coaches meeting and let them know it won't be tolerated, if I hear it in a game I'll pull the offender and they'll watch the rest of the game from the dugout or if it continues they'll be watching from the stands with their parents.

Sounds like to me that maybe you are one of those coaches who should be taking on these "kids with history".

I've thought about that, and have had the board "give" me a player who had to be removed from another team. I guess you could say it's a catch 22 situation. I don't like having to spend a lot of time dealing with the problems and less time teaching and coaching these kids the proper way to play the game and understand the rules, but then again it's rewarding to see a kid turn around by the end of the season and or have a parent tell me how much they are enjoying the season because of my coaching style.

This becomes evident when at the minor league level stadiums have reserved seating right behind home plate for......get this......hecklers.

I've been lucky in the fact that I have coached in the same league both baseball and softball and know most of the kids. Also, being on the board helps too. I agree with you from this coaching standpoint and plan to do such this season with the girl's fastpitch team I am helping coach. The only thing I can see getting in my way is my co-coach, who is the complete opposite of me, taking 30 minutes of every game to argue with the umpire when those 30 minutes could have been spent getting that one run we just lost back on the board.

that's why you list him/her as assistant coach, and tell them they are to keep their dam trap shut and not argue with the umps. :Cool2:

I would have love to, except her and my mother (it is my sister playing) are the ones that signed me up. I think she had to be listed as head coach in case I got the new job which means I'm working evenings.

I see it more in basketball than in BB/SB as things to tend to get more emotional in basketball because of how the game is is played anymore, fast and sloppy.

Do hate to toss a 9 yo but it happens...gave him a "T' in basketball for screaming "Foul you idiot" then in baseball I tossed him when he lit a catcher up when he was out by 6 steps.

BTW you can also be restricted to the bench for being a second offender of one of a few provisions after being warned, player involved and head coach gets to stay in the dugout. in Fed FP

Excuse me. A 9 yo calls you an idiot and you don't toss him? I don't know basketball but I'm guessing that you can pass go and collect the EJ.

I don't see the comparison between an illegal (MC) contact and a player calling you an idiot.

Basketball you do get a bit more leeway with something like that with the ability to issue a T however you could issue a flagrant T and he would of been gone. You really dont have much of a punishment in BB/SB than EJ, whereas in basketball the T gets the message across, usually, and things clear up.

I really wish baseball had some sort of "technical foul" penalty. Something like subtracting a run or adding or subtracting an out or two from the current half inning would be useful when something needs to be done, but maybe doesn't warrant an EJ. After 2 runs added or 2 "out" adjustments from a team, someone goes :HS

The only time I have heard profanity on a ball field by a player and I didnt toss him was this last weekend. 11U tourney in Knoxville and the batter hits an oppo BOMB! (We're playing on an adult softball field with a temporary fence at 210ft. This HR short-hops the adult softball fence.) F8 turns to F9 and says, "DAMN! That was a shot!". F9 agrees and then they both realize that I was watching and heard every word. F8 and F9 both instantly look down. I warn both and say, "I dont wanna hear anything like that again." I get "yes sir" out of both of them as I turn around and fight back the laughter.

Granted, its no F-bomb but when you are yelling it out across the field.....

Nowhere near a reason for "Bang! Zoom! To The Moon!" for me, I just got a kick out of them thinking they were in trouble for saying it.

I dont know about the rest of you, but if I dropped "DAMN" in front of my Mom at age 11 I would have been picking myself up off the ground.
