Ejection in a scrimmage

I had an ejection last night in a scrimmage. 2 Pony teams trying to get together and practice for the upcoming tournament. They went outside of their leagues for the scrimmage with umpires.

At this park the fence going up either the first base line or third base lines do not connect to the outfield fence. On either side there is a 15'-20' gap without any physical boundary's. During our plate conference I make a generic all encompassing statement of, "This field has a number of openings and trouble areas, if the ball does get out we will book rule it."

To this the home coach elaborates about the openings in the corners. and I reply, "If it does get out we'll take care of it."

Home team at bat in the bottom of the fourth. The batter hits a line drive past the third baseman which lands fair then veers to the open corner. I get about 50 feet up the line to watch this trouble ball and am standing relatively close to the home coach in the third base coaches box.

The ball rolls out the opening in the corner. I raise my hands and announce, "Out of play!" and signal 2. My partner echos the call. I look at the runner and it appears he had already stopped there on his own.

The home coach is red in the face yelling at the kid to come to third then go home.

I calmly looked at the coach figuring he was too busy coaching to hear me announce the ball was out of play and tell him while we're making direct eye contact, "It went out of play; that's two."

He yells, "But the left fielder is still chasing it so it's live" to me and continues to yell at his runner to advance.

I told the coach sternly, "It doesn't matter if he's chasing it or not it is still out of play."

He while still yelling at his runner to advance --trying to show me up, makes a "You're horrible and need to learn the rules" comment.

I held up the stop sign and said loudly, "That's enough!"

He continued with his comments about me being horrible and need to learn the rules, so I pulled the trigger.

After that half inning I'm taking my position along the 1st base line and the visiting coach comes up to me with some retrieved foul balls and says, "How the hell do you get ejected in a scrimmage?"

I just shook my head.

The visiting coach continued, "We went over that specifically in our meeting."

After the game the assistant home coach and head coach pro-temp comes up to me and says, "I don't know what that is about it happens probably every other game and it is always ruled the same just as you did."

The coach must of been working on his parking lot walk.

Did you get this assignment through the teams or your assignor? I know that when I do scrimages I'm mainly there to call pitches, make outs and rule the ball in play or not. The coaches don't even give crap about my calls.

I did one scrimage where one of the coaches started complaining about my zone being too low and I informed the coach that I was going to discuss my zone and he should work with his hitters on hitting that pitch (scrimage mind you) well next inning he brings it up and I pointed him the way to his car.

Did you get this assignment through the teams or your assignor?

Yes my association assigned it to me. I didn't know it was a scrimmage until I got there. Arbiter showed an AAU game which since they were playing outside of their league they had to pay the AAU rates versus league rates. So we called it just like a real game.

Yes, I had to write an ejection report. One of the baseball committee members (the one who set me up with a fake confrontation) replied to me with a "That a boy..."

LOL, now that is funny. Reminds me of the coach (3b) that when his runner is attempting to steal and gets hung up and then out. He goes to me between innings, I called time as my runner was moving and you guys need to hear it and let him go back. I was like, what is this Kick the Can.... you have safeties and out of bounds...

I worked a charity tournament last summer that was thrown together last minute to help out a coach's family after said coach was severely injured at work. Some of the teams didn't even have matching uniforms. My partner and I worked it for free.

Champ game, both managers get into an across the field argument, after a runner on one team crashed the opposing team's F4. I tossed the runner, but I guess that wasn't good enough, and the DC wants to elevate the situation. I tell the DC to knock it off, that the kid is tossed, and let's play ball. He yells a comment to the OC about playing dirty, OC manager yells something back. UIC warns both coaches, tells them to knock it off. One pitch is thrown, then they start it up again. The UIC says that's it, game over, see ya, bye! Seeing as that it was a meaningless tourney, and we weren't getting paid, I was more than ok with my UIC calling it.

I can swear I once saw a clip of Willy Stargell(sic?) trying to steal second and as he is getting thrown out by a mile and a half he is trying to call time by making a T with his hands. I think that was the same game that Ron Luciano refers to in one of his books where he accidently got Stargell picked off of second while talking to him.
