Just curious I work lower level competitive 12 about a 15 game season. I make 35 bucks a game no travel pay. Can anyone tell me what the big boys make because of health reasons I will never move up. I can take the 6o mph dings and that is about it. So please tell me how rich i COULD BE

Out here, from what I hear, is HS varsity you make $80 a game. I do not do HS (yet) so this is just hear say. But we make the same as what you posted for LL majors

HS we get $70.00, same for American Legion, college depends on level and is $90.00 to A$150.00

some of the local rec ball leagues pay $25-$30

Pay has come up a bit since I started in the "80s.....I made $6.50 a game my first summer....and 2 games a night.....$13!!

First off are you part of an umpire organization?

Normally the umpire organization you work for establishes the rates.

From your description I make 35 bucks a game no travel pay. it does not sound like you are part of an umpire organization because most umpire organizations will not service at that low of pay rate with no travel (espcially if you have to drive some 30 miles or so to do the game)

Without being part of an umpire organization you will most likely get small game Fees. Many of the so called "rug rat leagues" do not contract with an umpire organization to save on costs and simply 'ask around" and see who will do their games for x amount of dollars.

Recommendation: I know you said you have health problems but if you can do 12's then you should be able to do 13's. Get HS certified unless you already are. Tell the HS assignor about your health problems and you can only do the modified level (mostly 7th / 8th graders). You will have all the work you can handle at this level because most HS associations have a hard time filling umpires for this level.

Summary: if you want to earn more money, get HS certified and do the modified level. Also, become part of an umpire association and your fee structure will increase.

Must be nice. We've got several Pony age-brackets that pay less than 35 a game, and we get no travel pay for any games we do, at least through the levels I've had.

Me, I'd love travel pay in my org, since I'm essentially the farthest one away in the organization.

If you get paid less than $35.00 a game and have to travel, then it is not economical to umpire for this league. Personally I would not. Gas expense; wear and tear on your car plus the normal costs such as equip, shirts & accessories and you will be in the negative working at such a low Fee structure.

Our Summer Fee structure (no travel) is as follows:

CBL (Collegiate Wood bat league) $70.00 for 7 innings and $90.00 for nine

Legion - $60.00 for 7 and $70.00 for nine.

Youth leagues - 90 ft. diamond $60.00 for seven $70.00 for nine

Youth leagues - 60ft. diamond $50.00 for 6 innings; $60.00 for 7 innings and $70.00 for nine innings (sometimes rather then play 2 games they play one 9 inning game)

Umpiring is a business and while we cannot pay the mortgage on game Fees alone, the Fee structure should be equivalent of having a second job. Heck depending upon where you travel your ENTIRE game fee (you said less than $35.00) could be for gas alone.

I work for a small association travel less than 5 miles. The teams in our league are travel teams prepping for tournaments it is not a rat league. We do have a association in our area but I refuse to pay someone for assigning me work . The assignor I would take a bullet for and I always get the top games nearly every night.

They had a nice article in Referee Magazine this month on pay at the higher levels. In Miami, 35 to 50 a game for 10U to 14U; for HS (FED) $55 to $61 and adult; $75....

I was not referring to the league as a rat league but as RUG RAT or kiddie ball league if you will. I used the word Rug in front of the word rat for the old cartoon series the Rug rats.

I refuse to pay someone for assigning me work .

I have been averaging 140-150 games per year over the last 5 years. Not bad for the East Coast. Also, there are other benefits in joining an association.

1. All you need to be is available and you will get work No need to "hunt down" business

2. if I get a bounced check I am reimbursed for the amount of the game plus ALL bank Fees. I do not have to go "chasing' after my money.

3. FULL game FEE if the teams do not call up at least 2 hours ahead of time to cancel. If I leave I get paid. SOLO = pay and 1/2

3. Backing meaning if I or any member have a problem we have the full support of the association. In some instances depending upon the severity it meant not servicing this league anymore.

4. FREE one day clinics and DISCOUNTS on attending the weekend clinics taught by the Jim Evans group or the 5 week coarse that the PROS go through. This year members of the New Jersey Jim Evans facility gave us a one day mini clinic.

Those are the major ones. All in all it costs me 2 game Fees. One Game Fee covers my HS dues and one game Fee covers my Summer / Fall ball schedule.

In a nutshell if you want to umpire many games then it behooves one to join an umpire association.

I can see your point if all you do is 15 games per year.

Pete makes a very good point. The associations either national like (ABUA/ ESO) also provide nice benefits from insurance to Referee Mag, etc. and with many programs cutting sports for costs, the best umpires ie that are part of associations even local ones and have very good experience will continue to get the best/most games.....

20-25 dollars, plate umpire, is pretty much the standard for summer leagues that are not legion or other HS/college affiliated ball in SE Ohio.

Varsity HS around here is low end 35, high end 60-70.

City/Rec League, no travel pay (all games in the same city), no association dues, FED rules plus some in-house (mostly because all players bat, but also in younger levels a rotation on IF, OF,

9-12th, Majors Plate: $55 (full FED)

9-12th, Majors Bases: $45

7-8th, Bantams Plate: $50 (first level for leading off)

7-8th, Bantams Bases: $40

5-6th, Midgets: $45 (60', first level for stealing after ball crosses the plate)

3-4th, Cubs: $40 (60', first level pitching)

2-3rd, Mites: $35 (Coach pitch, 3 strikes/7 pitches, don't normally get umps until playoffs, then umps tend to have problems)

Very similar to what we get in our area. $25/plate, $20/bases for the summer. Sometimes you can get $35 in the summer depending on the level you're doing. HS can be anywhere from $45 for a single to $85 for a DH JV. Don't know about varsity, haven't made it there yet. Maybe next year. No travel re-imbursement, even in HS.

It's $35 for U9, U11 and U13 here. $45 for both U15 and U17. $70 for a legion game. As for high school we get $51 for a sub varsity game and $71 for a varsity.
