Anyone going to San Bernadino week long in November?
concertman1971 replied to Velho's topic in Youth Recreation Ball
Say hi to my guy Joe T from Nor CA. Great umpire and an even better human. Tell him Tim O says hi. I am rooting for him to get a WS assignment in Williamsport this year.- 1 reply

I've got this crazy idea to go spend 2 weeks or so in Japan next year and work some baseball games. I know, kinda crazy, but it sounds like it would be a fun experience. Anyone here have connections to someone in JP who could possibly help me out?

Low 83.1 High 91.1 unadjusted, and they use no buffer zone.

Last plate job I had, I was 2/2 Home team and 1/1 Visitors, some others 2/4, 3/6, 2/3, 0/3, 2/4. On my 3/6 day, I was 3/4 and the V F2 (late call up) was complaining about not getting a call in a blowout game. I told him they would challenge the pitches if I called them strikes. So I intentionally called a couple of borderline pitches strikes and guess what.....calls overturned. After the 2nd one I said to him, "this aint college anymore." Mumble under breath....................You bet. Both ways. When a strike is confirmed OR when it is overturned.
-
Having worked 2 seasons in the Pioneer League, which uses Trackman and challenges (max 6 per game, miss 3 and done), I am a fan of it. Does it suck to get overturned on a strike 3 punchy only to have the batter challenge and get back in the box with a 2-2 count? YUP. Also, at the pro level it forces umpires to focus for the entire game. Even in a 9-1 blowout. Remember, some of these guys are on bonus contracts, and an at bat "taken away" in a blowout just to get the game over could be worth 10's or even 100's pf thousands of dollars to the player. F1- Let em challenge. Almost every pitch they challenged was a confirmed ball. I did have a catcher once ask me to ignore the pitcher if he challenged. LOL. F2- These guys know what a strike looks like, especially if they are at their home stadium. Most got really good at learning when to challenge. Ball a 1-1 pitch, no one on, early in the game, he is probably not challenging. Late in the game, 2-1 or 0-1 pitch that was balled, good chance if he thought it was a strike he is challenging. They really learned to save the challenges for bigger moments. 1st season I had a team out of challenges in the 2nd inning. Hitter- Let em. Coin flip most of the time for these guys. Just my $0.02, but I love it.

At Face Value (Magnesium Masks & Other Things)

See below for my review of actual usage of the Mirage. Pitch was in and the batter was fast enough to get his hands through and make a full swing. 1. Yes, I am ok. Mild concussion (self diagnosed) but the symptoms did not show up until later that night/next morning. If I am in the same spot again, I will come out of the game. Not worth it for me. Happened Friday night, and this morning, while the headache has diminished, I still have a sore neck. 2. The Mirage Mask and All-Star Pads did their job. Straps were (what I feel) to be properly adjusted, and the mask did a disappearing act from my face! I will most likely be upgrading to the hard shell helmet for the 2026 season. The only damage to the Mirage was the small scratches on the frame from where it hit the ground. -
Yes, @jimurrayalterego is correct, the base layer tights do not have a cup pocket. I wear them for working out, under shorts, (both no cup required) and on the bases. With my cat-like reflexes, no cup necessary on the bases. LOL sometimes, when I am feeling frisky, I come out to go to the grocery with just the tights and a mock neck on. Mrs. ThighPro is typically not impressed...............

Jeff Gosney - New National Coordinator of Umpires
concertman1971 replied to johnnyg08's topic in Collegiate
Cline will be a great coordinator for the 3 D1 conferences that he has picked up, to go with the D2 and JUCO he already has. I worked in his group when I was in Nashville, and the instruction he and his staff give is some of the best in the country. -

In CA JUCO ball, this means he gives you a bottle of water pregame! LOL He is a solid guy and does know how to argue though! -
Here is my $0.02 You don't know, what you DONT know. Maybe no one has ever told him that one shouldn't take plays from that side. Maybe he has never been to a camp/clinic. Maybe he doesn't care. Maybe his ASSignor doesn't care. maybe he is a guy who works games solely for the cash because he is behind on Child Support payments. My guess is that he has never been trained, and this is the 1st time he has been in a "big game" where all eyes are on him and there are 42 "scout cameras" streaming the game. I am not going to throw this guy under the bus, but it appears that he has had no training. Did the 1st runner touch home? The actions of his head tell me he did not see. (lack of training). His need to "be somewhere" also tells me he lacks training. Think back to when you were 1st umpiring. If you were not doing "something" or "hustling" were you even umpiring. On of my umpire peers/mentors is SOOOO good at doing "nothing" (umpiring) until he has to do SOMETHING (umpire)! If no one has told him, he doesn't know. If he has been told and doesn't care, that is on him

from the wrist to the top of the bicep. Been wearing them for years now!
-
I heard a company offered skin-tone arm sleeves that were 3/4 length, moisture-wicking AND SPF 50. Take a guess how many umpires purchased these? Also, lets not forget lip balm with an SPF rating. it will suck to be old and have the lips removed due to never taking care of them.

All- I will be in PHX next week and if you want to put your hands on any of the ThighPro line, please let me know what products and sizes you would like to see and I will bring them. I know that sometimes guys need to put their hands on something before making a purchase, and here is your chance! Please let me know by Monday 7/21, as I will need to get the items from the warehouse. Tim
