What a time to be an umpire. Obviously we don’t get the whole picture of what transpired up until a few seconds before the punch….but I can use common sense, apply reason, and evaluate the situation - it doesn’t appear this guy’s teammates react or take issue with what the umpire is saying. If the umpire was out of line, instigating it himself, being unprofessional/inappropriate, we would see some type of reaction from the players. Without that, I can surmise this person just flipped out and made a very bad decision. Wow, after having watched this, I’m going to eat some crow. I completely jumped to several conclusions and I’m completely embarrassed by my reaction & posts. I prob would have folded like a cheap paper bag in this spot. What a spot to be in for him. We should be supporting and learning in every chance we can get. Sounds like a good chance to think twice before we know both sides of the story.

I think what he was implying is they didn’t *just* have “fan” status, but a higher status that of a parent; which applying all common sense understands any possible & probable reaction/action.

We just got the test here in Ohio. Is it similar to last year where correct answers were almost verbatim from case plays? I felt that’s how it was written/structured. Not saying anything wrong with that, just curious.

To be less “he’s being a hard-ass,” I’ve actually begun telling coaches, “If Bill has it foul, he’ll call it. We don’t hold foul balls waiting to be asked.” It’s actually been effective and I’ve never had any issues as the game goes on. It’s educational with me, ya know, to be of public service to coaches and all [emoji849][emoji849][emoji849].

If you didn’t want to EJ there, I’m not faulting you for it….it’s borderline. You could go a teeny step further and make that warning a written one and put him in the dugout. He’s got 2 options at that point; make the walk of shame across the diamond, or say an additional comment that gets the EJ. Then the rules are in your corner and he only has himself to blame. Very good on you to file a report. The next crew might get him and then it’s all on him, he’s got a record.

TW mask pads, bought about 4-5 (?) years ago. Kept as extra pads in the bag and never used. Bag kept in bedroom closet, not a cold garage or anything. Found them today and pulled out to get the bag ready for the season. They feel a little firm, but I can tell the foam does bounce back eventually. Ok to use? Pitch ‘em?

The plate can monitor P, if he’s dragging it along and pushing 20 sec, then address it. We don’t need this at the HS level.

Because there is integrity in using the rules to manage behavior that is not allowed, by rule. There’s no integrity in taking the pitch and shoving it up the player’s *** because the umpire was pissed off.

Yep, there’s proper recourse and procedure for these situations. There’s no defense for this. Scott Taylor once told me at his cbua camp, in regards to umpire conduct, “don’t do anything I cannot defend.” This is a textbook example.

An excellent point to not “go out, stay out.” Would look rather foolish standing in RF watching as you see your partner pinball between 3rd & home on a rundown, to, wait, why are we not helping our partner again?

I don’t mean to be harsh or critical of you, but then this same umpire you’re asking to come out from behind the plate and keep the kid all the way around the diamond? What if it’s that triple (and he better be getting close/great look at the bag, not calling it halfway from the mound), and there’s an overthrow….now he’s foot racing a 17 y.o. to the plate. Not a great work-through of mechanics. I think it’d serve best to have as many umpires in the play as possible.

No black coats here, sorry. Just the 44L navy. Have a lower profile 2nd CP, so still would like to try the 46L black or navy.

Not necessarily. HS, maaaaaybe I roll a written warning/dugout confinement. Depends on how it was done, tone, etc. Summer daddy ball - gone all day.

“No, no, no, no, no!” is not showing you up. “No! How many of those are gonna be missed? Can we get a call!?” is definitely showing you up.

Our Assoc. used to get 1/2 the varsity game rate. About 2-3 years ago they went to full game rate. Standard 2 umpire assignment, with 7 innings - play it like reg season. Umpires will organize on our own if we want cage work, get reps in at practices, etc.
