I wouldn't call the guy a idiot. The OP doesn't mention the level of this game. It could be a new guy just starting out. Many of us made these kind of mistakes when we started. Never forget we are a brotherhood. That part of the infield fly rule is something you learn as an 8 year old playing baseball, so I can't imagine kicking that one based on just getting started. I suppose it is possible that the situation is not as described, though.

To me he is saying the A.J. has been in the league for 13 years or so and should know to just catch the ball and get the call more often than when appearing to jerk it back into the zone. The pitch appeared to be borderline knee while over the plate.

At pre-game, 1st names are told for a reason.....to be used. I correct anybody & everybody who calls me "sir" or "blue". I am not a color nor am I an officer in the military. I explain it to them as nice as can be to please call me "Woodie". People dont announce themselves at pre-games as "Coach" or "Sir/Blue". First names ARE in fact the PROFESSIONAL way. Baseball is a BLUE collar sport. I guess I'm just more old-school or formal or whatever, but I'm generally not on a first name basis with minors, so I tend not to say my first name to non-adult players. Coaches - i'll generally mirror what they say. If they use first names, I will too. If they say sir, so will I (or coach). And I have absolutely no problem with anyone calling me sir. Then again, I was an officer in the military so I'm kind of used to it I don't have a lot of players coming out to my plate meeting.

I've been called "Blue" on a rec football field. On the varsity football field, they are given my first name so that when they call me by name, I know it is the head coach. I've been called all sorts of things on a baseball field, including "ref", There are coaches that will remember your name and use it. The example that will always stick out in my head on that was when a travel team's pitching coach got my name before the game and in the 5th inning this pitching coach politely asked about the location of one pitch with "Jeremy, was that one off the plate?" I will remember it because the pitching coach that remembered my name and used it was none other than Phil Niekro, Baseball Hall of Famer.

DI tends to have some funny looking strike zones when it comes to the Braves. Not quite like Eric Gregg in Game 6 of the 1997 NLDS but funny none the less.

Week 1 for the 2nd time. Had a lot of fun last year. Met some cool peeps like UmpireChick1 and her husband. Was in the field for a perfect game on Tuesday and followed that up with one behind the plate on Wednesday morning. It was in the 90s when I left Georgia on Friday afternoon, and in the 50s when I got to New York in the wee hours of Saturday morning. Another year of experience so I hope to be an even better umpire after another week up there.

Can't wait...well I am not thrilled with the 14 hour drive up there, but I enjoy it after getting going up there.
