  1. I try to have the same level of tolerance for every game I work. I understand that it can get very emotional out there and like LRZ I have a fairly slow trigger but I also know what actions I consider to be acceptable and what I consider to be unacceptable. It is the coach's responsibility to keep himself in the game not mine. If he wants to be emotional but reasonable he can be that way all day. But if he decides to be a clown and get himself tossed I will not lose any sleep over it.
  2. Biscuits and gravy is my breakfast of choice on game day.
  3. What gives you the right to demand that he remove his jewelry? The rule prohibits him from playing with jewelry, not from wearing jewelry. Well if he's in the batter's box he is most likely playing.
  4. Welcome to the boards. As you have seen in the posts above this site is a wonderful source of knowledge of almost every part of umpiring.
  5. Welcome to the boards.
  6. Welcome to the boards.
  7. I am extremely protective of the rookies I work with. If any of those things mentioned in the op occur to a rookie umpire while I'm on the field with them. Coaches are going home early at the very least and the fan is going to sit in jail for a while.
  8. What was cowardly about it is how you went about it. It's ok to disagree but please do it in a respectable manner and in the right place.
  9. Sounds like a textbook ej to me.
  10. A cowboy rides into town on a Friday. He stays in town for 3 days and leaves on Friday. How did he do it?
  11. I agree with BT_Blue. That thread is an amazing showing of how much we cared for him.
  12. We have one of the most thankless jobs but one of the absolutely most rewarding and even though we have rough moments we still come back every spring. I keep coming back because every game I get to watch a little kid have fun learning a game that I have enjoyed my entire life. Yes, I deal with angry coaches just like every other umpire but that does not ruin the experience of watching a kid smile as he gets his first hit or strikes out his first batter. That is why I plan to umpire as long as I can.
  13. @andy.dufresne, You are a coward and will never in your wildest hopes and dreams be even a fraction of the man and umpire that Mike was.
  14. I'm against it. Can't anything exist for its own sake without naming it after someone? Roads, bridges, stadia, games, fields, courts, awards, professorships, head coaches, seats....geez. Mike was a brother to us. He was one of the best umpires and friends that has ever walked on this earth. He deserves every single honor that we can give him. You don't understand what he has done for this site and for baseball in general. Not only has Mike helped me on here but he helped me get through a rough part of my personal life too. To him I'm eternally grateful.
  15. I second this motion.
  16. I think the memorial week is a good idea.
  17. RIP Mike. He was a great help to us in umpiring.
