I thought you did it right all the way. You tried to keep players in the game but he gave you no choice. It is funny to me that he would say that and then get mad when he was dumped.

I fully understand your thoughts. But I won't allow coaches to attack my partner, regardless of his zone. The time to deal with training and teaching is OFF the field. But, while we're a crew, we're a team. Ppl won't differentiate one ump from another most of the time. You're "the umps" or "those umps." The only friend you have on the field is your partner. Even if he's bad, he's still your teammate. Look for timing/head height/tracking issues and maybe tell him between innings what you see. But ffs don't just stand there while he gets raked across the coals. We've all had those horseSH*# games. If he's off, the complaining will only be compounded by your lack of teamwork. And his zone will deteriorate even further. Don't just be a partner, be the partner YOU would want to work with. I get what you are saying about being a team. However if my partner is A) willing to put up with coaches jumping his a$$ all game and B) too lazy to work on his zone then he deserves to get lit up by a coach. If I jump in and save him he will not learn and he will expect his next partner to do the same. How do you think it will go if I tell the PU his zone is bad? he is going to think I am putting him down and he will get an attitude. If the coach decides to bring the word you guys or these umps into the conversation I have no problem getting involved and showing him the door.

I agree with maven if I have a strong partner I dont have to say much cause good umpires have good zones so this does not happen and if it does the coach usually is gone quick. If it is a young umpire I will tell the coach to knock it off cause I want to protect my young ump. The worst thing is when you get a ump with a zone that is just horrible. I will never sell my partner out but at the same time I am not going to war for a umpire that seems to not care enough about his job to learn the zone.

I have many times either went to my partner or he came to me and the conversation is "Man those girls in the stands are smoking hot you think they would buy us some beer after the game? yeah I doubt it oh yeah runner was safe HC is a douche bag so shake your head like you agree with me it will make him feel better". What this does is make the coach feel better and it can stop him from getting fired up. Now that again does not mean I do it everytime he ask me to. Both of these practices are 100% do-do. If there is a reason to ask for help, ask. If you have the call, 100%, don't ask. You going to your partner to ask him what he had for lunch to make it look like your discussing the play is totally unprofessional. You may placate the fishing HC in your game, but you make it more difficult for the next crew that doesn't put up with HCs that are just fishing for a call that's to their benefit. I think you are taking this way too far and putting too much into it. Sorry you have to put up with all those coaches asking you to get help cause of guys like me. I dont know how you make it throu the night with all that pressure. You must have to eject coaches all night cause of this. If you are driving and get lost and your wife ask you to pull over and get directions do you eject her out of the car? If your kids ask you a question and they say they are going to go ask mommy now do you eject them out of the house? PS....I love how you used not only the bold but underlined it however I would have done it also in ALL CAPS just to prove you are the best and we should all strive to be as professional as you at all times on the field.

You may as well short cut the process and just ask everytime. Or, even better -- just have PU make all the calls. I don't think he literally meant anytime a coach asks him to get help. There would have to be some doubt or the situation might call for it. This is a case where in my opinion you have to umpire. You have to have that sense of what is best for the purpose of game management. Sometimes when you are 100% certain of your call, it may still work in your favor to go to your partner to pacify the coach a little (obviously you have to read it correctly and do it form a position of authority not submissiveness). In that case I would probably tell my partner during the conversation that I saw it and don't need to hear anything from him. Then I'd confirm the call. I've done this before and gotten a thank you from the coach and all was well. If it is a manipulative coach that I feel may try to use it again, I might just explain that it was my call and I saw it all the way so there is nothing for me to get help on. I think some of you feel that it is ALWAYS wrong to pacify a coach. I think anything that is not going against the rules, and makes our jobs easier is all good. If being a hardass and owning my call creates unnecessary tension on the field, then I think it is a bad decision, when a simple private meeting with my partner gives the coaches a warm fuzzy feeling. You may as well short cut the process and just ask everytime. Or, even better -- just have PU make all the calls. Let me clear this up a little. When I am the BU and there is a close play and the HC comes out and ask me to get help on it I will if I believe I may have kicked the call or I believe the PU may have had a view of something I was blocked out on. I dont go to my partner on every call or cause the HC ask me to like you seem to think I do. This is called getting the call right and not standing there like some fat lazy ump who is too proud to get help.

When I am the BU no matter if I am in A, B or C I make the call with what I saw. If the coach comes out and ask me to get help with the call or if I think I might have kicked it I will go to HP umpire and ask him if he saw a pulled foot etc. If he is 100% sure I will reverse it no problem we got it right that is all that matters.

I did 3 games a couple of months ago for a mens basketball rec league. They were my first games ever for adult and my last games ever for adult. It was horrible all three games were won by 30 points or more, There was 6 T's called, 2 fights on the court and enough trash talk to fill arrowhead stadium. I would rather umpire t ball than do that again.

If you hire every spring and fire after the season you are still going to have him trying to get a lawyer if you do not hire him in the spring. The court is going to want to know why you all of the sudden did not hire him. So my suggestion is this. Hold tryouts for umpires in the spring. Tryouts include - Written test covering all age groups - On field test (you could have practice games with teams from the league) Have umpires who work college or High School come out to help you evaluate all umpires on the field. Use the test and evaluation to decide what umpires to use and what age group they will be used for. Example if umpire A sucks tell him his results are low and he will only be used for T Ball or Coach Pitch.

I am with PonyUmpire the HC should not have went to your partner but your partner should have never said anything other than "That is his call coach." It is not his call and not for him to say anything other than that. I would have ejected him as soon as he said that's 2 calls now. Good job with the UIC if they want you too take it then they need to double there pay or find someone else

I refuse to umpire a forfeit game. I get paid to umpire baseball games and when it is a forfeit it becomes a scrimmage not a baseball game. - Legal reasons - I am not going to take a chance getting hurt for nothing - Already get yelled at enough dont need it in a game that does not even count Had a coach get mad at me one time over this and I told him "Coach I think you should take your anger out on the kids that did not show up not the umpire who will not ump your practice game"

My wife coaches my daughters 12U softball team. They played the other night at a park that is known for its horrible umpires and she got the old guy who is the worst of them all. Wife's team had bases loaded 2 out in the bottom on the last inning. Ball is pitched hits the ground then bounces up and hits the batter My wife is coaching 3rd base and tells her girls to go to the next base cause she knows the rules. 3rd base runner jogs to home plate, the catcher tags her and the umpire calls her out My wife runs down to him and ask what are you talking about the ball is dead and she goes to first He says NO! it hit the ground first before it hit her so it is not a pitch and the ball is still live My wife went ape sh!t on him and since this sorry a$$ league has no UIC's or protest she was screwed

I never talk to asst coaches on plays. I will ignore anything they say unless it is something I need to eject them for or if they continue to walk toward me I will tell them to please go to there dugout. When the 1B coach says "see your walking away cause you dont want to talk about it" I would have turned back walked to the HC and said "Sorry coach did not see you coming I will talk to you but your asst coach needs to go back to the dugout first." Then I would have started with what did you see coach? Let him explain what he saw and then tell him what you saw. After that there is no more talking about it no matter what he says follow it with I got him out coach lets play ball and start walking to the A position. I agree with MidAmUmp If the kid runs his mouth I ignore but he is now on my radar. After the play if he is giving me the stare down I would have told him to knock it off if he wants to stay in the game. His stare is not on accident he is doing it cause he is trying to flex on you and I am not going to let some little punk get away with that on me.

I always point and say play after TO or foul ball. I also point when there is no one on base. I worked with a younger kid a few months ago and the first inning I noticed he did not put it back in play so I had a talk with him after the inning and told him why he needed to do this. He blew me off, had this stupid grin on his face like I was bugging him and had a ego like he was the best ump ever. 3rd inning HT batting with runner on third foul ball pitcher gets it back catcher is down, pitcher is on the mound and the batter is in the box snap throw to third runner was leaning so it was a clear out. I said I got no out here coach ball was not put back in play. HT coach is not happy at all grabs a UIC to come out. UIC comes on the field we let him know what we got and he looks at the PU and says "I dont know how they do t ball but in 8th grade we put the ball back in play" He had that sad puppy look on his face the rest of the game. I saw him two weeks ago and he was putting the ball back in play so guess it got it.

I am working as the UIC and one of the umpires calls to say she will be 20 minutes late so now I have to change and jump on the field until she gets there. It was a 10U girls game and I am the BU. HT is up to bat low pitch he calls strike 3 some guy in blue shirt leans out of the dugout and says "that pitch was lower than the last one and you called it a ball". He then goes outside of the dugout into the bleachers and stands behind the fence running his mouth about balls and strikes. The inning is over and I ask the HC "is the man in the blue shirt a coach or a parent"? Coach - what does it matter? ME - if he is a coach he needs to stay in the dugout if he is a parent he needs to stay out of the dugout. Coach - I dont know why you guys keep picking on him why do you have it out for him?" ME - coach I dont know that man never seen him before. Coach tells the man in the blue shirt he can't be in the dugout The man in the blue shirt looks at me and says "you are a piece of sh*t" right in front of the team and loud enough for the other team to hear in there dugout. ME- your gone start walking. HC comes out of the dugout yelling at the plate umpire asking him why he has it out for his team? ME - coach if you will calm down I will explain things to you Coach - I am not talking to you. He gets in the PU face and tells him he has been against them all year and is a horrible umpire. He turns around and says to me "now what do you have to say to me now"? ME - your gone too please leave the dugout and find your way to the parking lot. He storms off cussing me out as he is leaving calling me a piece of sh*t, I get to the A position and the ump who was running late takes over. I tell the GM what went on and she tells me good ejections and BTW the HC is the father of the blue shirt guy you tossed before him we get a good laugh out of that. Later on I saw both coaches standing inside the fence watching the game. They see me and start kissing my a$$ telling me they were sorry etc. I said thank you for being man enough to admit you were wong. They ask if they could come back in and I said the ejection is for the game its not a timeout. GM comes up and tells them they need to find there car and leave. As they are walking off I hear him say I told you he was a piece of sh*t.

I am with Jocko on this one. I would love to see a parent come up and grab me. He will walk up to me and be carried out. I take every threat serious. Here is what needs to happen - All baseball parks, basketball locations and High Schools need to make parking just for officials and umpires and it should be away from the rest of the public - All threats should be taken for real and cops need to be called - If a parent or coach make a threat and are found guilty you should be banned for one year - If a parent or coach touches a official the cops should be called and if found guilty they should recieve a life ban. I should not have to go to work and be in fear that some low life is going to attack me

The only reason for the manager to ask is cause he thought it was a strike no other reason for him to ask. I dont have this problem in high school or higher levels I only get this in 12U and below. If not telling the coach where the ball was is bad game management then so be it. Not necessarily. Part of any coaches job is to help his team adjust to the strike zone. Some coaches actually are asking so they can help make these adjustments. Some coaches ask as a way of voicing their displeasure. We need to manage the game appropriately, but I have found that just "not answering" leads to further problems. Address it one way or another. If you won't entertain the question, then let them know that in a professional way. If they refuse to heed your direction, then it's on them. I hear what you are saying but we have a different view on this and that is fine you have your way and I have mine. It is my job to call the game not explain every action to a coach. To me it is the coach trying to let you know he thought it was a strike and taking a shot at me.

I agree shut the manager down as soon as he starts talking about how bad the umpires were in the last game. We have to have each others backs and letting him run down a umpire in front of you is never accepted. I work as a UIC so I am sorry he acted like this to you. When I work as a UIC I am there to make sure all the umpires show up, watch the umpires and give them advice on things they are doing wrong and have there back.

I call strikes I say nothing on balls and I dont show where it missed I will not answer a coach on location cause I dont explain my zone I also will not tell the catcher to tell his coach. What if the catcher thought it was a strike and he tells his coach IDK it looked like a strike to me? You just told the catcher to tell his coach where it was and he answered what he thought are you going to eject him or warn him?

The last thing I need when doing a game is some umpire trying to scream over the coaches, players and fans what he is doing when we could have had a plan before it happened Millerforrest if you work somewhere that does not use signals more power to you but that does not make it right it just makes it your way.
