  1. Yeah, Red Sox nation needed someone (Pedroia) to weakly ground out to end the series, so they can put all their over-reaction efforts into the Patriots/Bruins/Celtics.
  2. If the ball/strike calls were computerized ... Siri: strike three Pedroia : DA FAQ YOU TALKING ABOUT, YOU ELECTRONIC POS. THAT PITCH WAS LOW AND INSIDE. Siri: You sound a bit tense. May I suggest a cup of herbal tea. I found two coffee shops within 5 minutes of your location.

    Tagging Up

I think the previous responses might be a bit too "inside baseball" for the OP. "do you have to tag them or is it a force out?" Either tagging the runner or tagging the base with ball secured before the runner touches that base is an out. It looks like a force out, but technically it is something else. But still an out.
  4. All good. Evals are supposed to be food for thought. Even though some points might have been off-base, they made me review what actually happened and consider a better way of handling the sitch. Thanks for taking the time to eval.
  5. Agreed ... solid advice. But aren't we all glad that I took a second to decide against, "Hey you, (3BC) STFU, batter, you're out on K3, and runner (R1) you're out on the batter's interference." I gotta get some positive eval points for that decision at least. haw
  6. Point taken... the only thing that I was not sure of was whether to deal with 3BC immediately for hollering, "No way...Are You Serious ?" when I announced BI or whether to finish my proper verbals once the play at 2B was decided. That did throw me off a bit. And I can see where one could evaluate that as it looking like I was unsure of the verbals required here. Lesson learned.
  7. I consider myself approachable on disputed calls. I can be friendly when it is a friendly game, focused and concise with explanations when it is a competitive game, but what I really have trouble with is maintaining a professional demeanor/body language when the HC starts acting stupid. Weakest part of my game management. Keep intending to work on this, but suffereing fools is not my strong suit. I don't bait the stupid ones anymore (so that's an improvement), but I still get that consternated (unprofessional) look on my face, saying little and hoping that he'll eject himself so that we can get back to a quiet baseball game. Any suggestions other than be better aware of what one projects ?
  8. Now that video is gone (nobody can see it anymore). I'll comment about the mechanics comments. While I did verbally and non-verbally indicate BI and (albeit after I hollered back at 3BC) communicated the penalties, I did not communicate it loud enough to be picked up on the behind the backstop video. But everyone on the field and dugouts heard me. I could have been louder, but I really thought that this was a no-brainer BI and not worthy of a lot of fanfare/explanation... but I do understand and appreciate that feed back. BI isn't a common call in a game, and loud communication of the call and penalty enforcement is a good idea and can save you grief from in front of as well as behind the backstop. I can't make any excuse for my sloppy JV fall-ball (stay loose, blue) plate mechanics...purposely left my A game in the back of the pick-up truck. But then, I can work this Monday...sore foot, but no broken anythings else...it was what it was. Maybe I could have done something different to save HC from himself before the EJ. Maybe try to nip in he bud his protest of a 4 minutes old call. And I'm sure he took offense to my staring daggers at him after he was hollering his displeasure about the BI call from the 3BC box. Maybe not text book game management from a de-escalation point of view, but I wanted to non-verbally communicate my displeasure at his way of demonstrating his displeasure. Again, not my A game, game management, but when he came back for more between innings, and because of the other crap that went on previously, I just wasn't inclined to save him, and was content to let him eject himself ... it was what it was. Thanks again for the feedback.
  9. You left coast surfer boys need to get out of bed earlier...haw. Head coach of the school (varsity coach) calls me 10 minutes ago. He's addressed/addressing his fallball coach issue. I told him about the video, he said that he'll take care of that. 5 minutes later, HC's father took down the video.
  10. If you think that HC's line was funny, you'll love his earlier gem. Swinging strike pitch that goes through the five hole of his F2 untouched and hits the inside of my back foot in flight so squarely that the ball drops right in front of HP... no deflection, I took it all. R3 can't score because ball is right in front of HP. As I am limping around trying to walk it off, this HC says, "It's OK guys, nobody hurt". Nobody, eh ? That and other less note-worthy dickish behavior ensued, so when he risked closing his comedy act with the "that's why they call you blue" line, I took the opportunity to give him the figurative Gong Show GONG.
  11. Where I come from, this call would be proper if offensive team was named the Yankees. CPS should be called and child abuse charges filed on the parents who allowed their kid to be dress in Yankee garb. Yankees suck ! LOL
  12. Don't know how long this will be available, but this video has in it an umpire very close to me. The to-be-EJ'd HC's daddy recorded/posted this video on the internet. https://www.pscp.tv/w/bKfYAzF4a1FEQndnQVJvanp8MVJEeGxtemVRUnJLTFk4QXIRCSeki0YmrYrfK70Y2UQDFOYcKXOYUDMNVujN Fall ball JV baseball. 5 min mark ... K3, BI PU: "That's interference" 3BHC: "No way...Are you serious ?" PU: "Yes, I am", then enforces R1 out penalty. PU: stares daggers towards 3BHC for hollering across the field. 3BHC: silent about the call for next 4 minutes until ... 9 min mark ... HC EJ 3BHC wants to know how close the play at 2B was going to be on the BI play. PU/BU: "it doesn't matter" (it might, but no sense opening that can of worms here). 3BHC: "You blew the call ... you blew it". PU: meh ... listening 3BHC: "That's why they call you blue" PU: "Your ejected" verbal and non-verbal
  13. I messed up backends of many a few two DPs. Always because I stayed with the play at 2B too long and the banger at 1B blew-up on me. If an umpire has similar experience, the fix is to not do that anymore. Let PU, who has this responsibility, get the FPSR violation at 2B. PU having FPSR is on my pregame checklist. Be sure you don't have a partner like in the OP.
  14. Never said that. Staying with the play at 2B has to include some evaluation time (int or not). If an umpire is going to call FPSR, there is no need to see what happens at 1B, but if he decides that there is no interference, the banger at 1B is about to happen (if it hadn't already). 0.75 seconds goes by quick. I have all I can do to see the gloving/out at 2B, then turn to pickup BR approaching 1B. If you can stay with the play at 2B longer and still get the banger at 1B, more power to you. But if I was going to prioritize events, not missing the banger at 1B would be much higher than staying with the potential FPSR at 2B that PU is supposed to get.
  15. A middle infielder that can throw 75 mph gets the ball to F3 is about 0.75 seconds. If you can stay with a possible FPSR, get your head/eyes turned 90+ degrees, focus your vision on 1B in time to decide B/R safe/out "easily" in less than 0.75 seconds, then I tip my cap to you. 75 mi 1 hr 5280 ft ------- * ------- * ---------- = 110 ft/sec hr 3600 sec 1 mile Account for F3 stretch and MI inside 2B, then the ball travels about 83 feet. 83 feet time = ----------- = 0.75 seconds 110 ft/sec wonk, wonk
  16. Unless the PU is a U-E member, me thinks it'll probably remain unanswered.
  17. Of course there is support for calling interference if an umpire judges that a runner is not running the bases normally, 6.01a(5). The only controversy is the judgment of the play (not any rule to support a call). On-field umpires judged that the runner was running the base normally ... that means you have nothing. Given the judgment made, the rule application (or lack thereof) was correct, so the protest was denied.
  18. Holliday previously doing this, I read about ...hearsay....no video evidence...yet. I'm talking about future occurrences of this brilliant bambozzlement. I can't imagine that it'll be the last.
  19. If this retreat to 1B becomes "a thing" (I hear this isn't Holliday's first time doing this), I'm wondering how many occurrences it'll take before umpires start ruling that this is not running the bases normally. #bambozzle
  20. Exactly, the rule doesn't say that F1 is prohibited from getting any sign/signal from F2 (or anyone) when not engaged. The rule says that F1 takes sign from the rubber (not the same thing). If you are calling an illegal pitch ball/balk with F1 off the rubber (in Fed), you have ruled a violation before F1 has a chance to satisfy his obligation (when he engages the rubber). Once F1 engages, looks towards F2 who may or may not make a "discernible sign", and there is no quick pitch issue, the "taking signs from the rubber" obligation is satisfied.
  21. Why did the AL require F1 in contact originally ? ...to prevent quick pitching.
  22. 1. This rule was added to prevent quick pitches, if there isn't a quick pitch issue, I'd never bring up taking signs off the rubber. 2. If the OHC brought up the issue, and there are no quick pitch issues, I'd use the "is he REALLY getting a sign off the rubber" position and send OHC back to the dugout with an understanding that we're not going to delay the game further for this issue. 3. If there is a quick pitch issue associated with not taking signs from the rubber (never have seen it), then rule is to be enforced.

We aren't supposed to get sarcastic with people asking ridiculous on this forum, but this one is hard to resist. When your league is making up crazy rules and you have to deal with unintended consequences that are not spelled out in said crazy rules, then you have the authority to supplement the situation with whatever crazy solution that comes to mind. 8.01(c)

    Stalling

So the visitors are down by 4. The HT is stalling on defense, and your solution is to call penalty outs on the DT ? That is definitely a make $#!+ up rule. And if my partner is thinking about adding time to a game clock, forgetaboutit. Time has expired, game over. If he thinks there is still time on the clock, I hope his one-man skills are up to snuff. Let the TD deal with stalling
