    Out of play

Its been a weird year for base awards for me. I had my first of the season this week. Very strange indeed.
  3. Assuming the batter hit the ball, what would cause the batter to hit again in the next inning? We need more information.
  4. "Look Greg, I am giving you 3 feet outside, I can't give you 4..."
  5. 4 games isn't a whole lot of games in a day, but for some it may be their limit. I find that if I work a tournament and have 6 games a day, by the 4th game I'm pretty much toast. There is no value in working umpires that hard, in my opinion, as the quality will suffer in the later games.
  6. I am curious, how many games did he do this day?
  7. Don't try to talk over a coach who is ranting at you. When he stops to take a breath, I will say, "Bill, do you want to know what I saw?"....If he then continues his rant, I will put my hand up in the stop sign and say, "Bill, we are done here" and I will turn and walk away. What he does next will determine his fate.
  8. Hard to tell on the TV, but I would say right on the line. The issue I have is the movement toward the plate.

    Balk Move?

Watching LSU vs. Missouri, Missouri lefty picks off R1 with what looked like to me a balk move. Instead of stepping directly to 1b, the pitcher's free foot is moving toward the plate and then he plants very close to the 45 degree line and throws to first. Is this a balk?
  10. I am heading toward the gate, if someone comes up and wants to say 'good game' I will respond. But, I do not hang around for hand shakes.

    Balk?

We had a pretty animated discussion on about the same topic at our meeting last night. No runners on, pitcher in the set position, and he doesn't come to a stop. Do we call illegal pitch on this??
  12. I have used my new lineup card holder for a few games now, and I love it!! It will last for a long time too, not break or crack like the cheap plastic ones. Remember those line up cards that used to be about just a bit bigger then a postage stamp, I think they came with the scorebook? I hated those.
  13. Yes, most of the conversation was me empathizing with the coach and his feeling of frustration. He wanted to get it off his chest, I let him. We agreed to disagree. It was a very good baseball game.
  14. I didn't say my partner blew this call, I said sometimes calls get missed. Had I said that I thought my partner had missed the call, he would have told my partner that, he did not. He told my partner that I asked him if he was 100% sure of his call.
  15. If the HC had been aggressive or agitated the discussion would not have even started. He was conversational, so we had a conversation. The key take away from the experience is don't say anything that you don't want to get back to your partner. I kept the conversation about 'just the facts' and not my personal opinion. Had I told the HC that I thought my partner kicked the call, there would have been a different outcome.
  16. Varsity game, I have the dish. The game is tied 3-3 going into the bottom of the 6th where the HT takes a one run lead. Top 7 the VT gets their lead off runner on base. Ground ball to F6 who bobbles it a bit and throws to 2b for the force. The play is a banger, partner calls R1 safe. DHC comes out and discusses the call, he think the runner should be out, asks my partner to get help and he comes to me. Here are my questions: 1) Should you get help on calls that should be 100% yours? A banger at first, you are in A, do you go for help? 2) Is your partner throwing you under the bus if he does come for help ? Here are my thoughts on these questions: 1) No, you shouldn't go for help on calls that are yours. Own your calls. We live or die by them. Get help when you are screened or maybe aren't in the best position. If you think you got your call wrong, fix it yourself. 2) I think in some ways you are putting your partner on the spot, because they are now in a lose-lose situation. Here's what happened at the game. My partner came to me for help, I asked him if he was 100% sure he got the right call, or did he want to change the call. I wouldn't change it for him. He said he was so the call wasn't changed. VT goes on a small rally and ends up going up 5-4. Between innings the Home HC asks me what I saw on that play, and I said, we ruled and that was it. He said that I had to have seen the runner out by a full step. I said, my partner was right on top of the play, I was 120 feet away. He asked, if I saw the out I had a responsibility to change the call for the integrity of the game. I told him that there are only certain calls that should be changed, and that sometimes an incorrect call happens, we can't debate every close call that happens to go against you. He didn't like that answer.
  17. That's my question. The BU was continually crossing the baseline, moving out to behind second base, facing the plate. Saw it on a steal attempt and to cover 2b on a ground ball/double play possibility. I saw the same thing happening on a couple of different games I saw. Granted they started in deep B, on the baseline. Maybe going out is quicker than trying to bust inside?
  18. I am watching an NCAA game with a 3 man crew. Two times the BU from B has gone from inside on the baseline to stand behind second base on base hits. Is this a new mechanic? R1, U3 is in B.. ground ball to F4, base ump moves behind 2nd base?
  19. If you are calling the runner out for being out of the basepath to avoid a tag, you are making a loud out verbal call a well as a aggressive hammer and giving the 'out of the basepath" sweeping signal. That is the call that will prevail.
  20. Me: "Did you just ask my partner about this call?" Coach: "How's your season going?" Me: "Nice talkin to you..."
  21. Even if the batter gets hit in the box on a throw to third, it's not interference unless the batter does something to interfere.
  22. I had TD of a Jr LL sectional game once ask me to eject a coach at the plate meeting. Apparently they had gotten into it when the affidavits were reviewed, so the TD wanted the guy gone. I said, "no".
  23. DHC comes out of the coaches box to argue a fair/foul call. That will be a quick conversation. Holding 'stop' sign up, "Yes it was fair, now back in the box"
  24. You might recall that CC put forth the idea of starting in B, calling from behind the mound when working one man, as well as the PU taking the back end of the DP. As for covering third, in 2 man, there are two situations where the PU covers third, 1) runner on 1st, or 1st and 3rd, ball in the outfield, runner and ball come into 3rd and 2) runners 1st and 2nd, fly ball and runner on 2nd tagging and advancing to third with a throw. Be sure to pre-game this or you might find your plate partner sitting at third with you there too.
