Jeff, how do I add a signature to my posts? Since the redesign, I can't seem to figure out how.

@ALStripes17 Just curious, what do you guys think constitutes a "formal warning"? Obviously, "that's enough" doesn't qualify, and neither does a stop sign. What about something like "Bob, I'm warning you, no more", or "Jim, I'm warning you not to come out."? Do I really have to go with "Bill, this is your warning for arguing balls and strikes. If you continue you will be ejected", followed by pulling my lineup card out like an idiot. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I hear you. My point was more about wanting to be able to warn without restricting. Clearly I can still eject a coach without warning if I think it's appropriate (I guess my comments on that were more a reaction to the OP than the rule change itself).
-
Firstly, I don't like how FED takes away my discretion on how to manage the game. If I think a warning alone will be effective for a particular coach, why should I have to restrict him to the dugout. Secondly, if a coach yells to me across the field that I need to learn the rules, he's done. If a coach breaks my personal space barrier and deliberately gets in my face, he's done too, unless he backs off real quick. I don't need him glowering at me from the dugout for the rest of the game.

This is usually how I handle it.. http://m.mlb.com/video/v5975865/ariwsh-hinch-is-ejected-arguing-a-play-at-first The "get the **** out of here!", followed by the hand wave, is essential.

MLB to adopt new rules for 2B slides, mound visits

Let's not get excited now. The term "desertion" doesn't even appear in the rulebook, as far as I'm aware (it sounds like your partner pulled it out of his a**). I was just pointing out that there is no analogue to abandonment when it comes to the batter.
-
Desertion, on the other hand, tends to have a harsher punishment. I know some states allow lashing. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

No, the batter can't be called out for abandonment. It looks like he forgot the count and thought he was out. Just bring him back. Calling him out for "delaying the game" would be an example of using the rules to create problems rather than solve them.

Develop a reputation as being approachable, but not tolerating arguing for the sake of arguing. Then, you can turn to a coach and say "come on Bill, you know I'm not going to argue balls and strikes with you", and that will often be the end of it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I've EJ'd for this. Me: "Bob, you're not gonna go to my partner because you didn't get what you wanted from me".. "Leave it alone Bob, go back to the dugout".. "Bob, I'm warning you not to go over there" *starts talking to my partner* (to my partner) "Dave, is he asking you about the call" My partner: "Yup" Me: "BOOM" (We need a Bill Haller smiley)

Oh no, zombie thread alert! Nice job @udbrky..
-
I'd go with "thanks for the input coach" (with an optional sarcastic smirk), while continuing to walk away.

HS age kids don't really get much rope with me on BS. I'll often go with a "be quiet!", followed by a "go sit down!" if need be (if it's strike three). I usually reserve "that's enough" for coaches, although I'm not really a fan of game-management-by-script. How high were these curves exactly? Maybe the player had a beef. Did you talk to your partner about the zone in your post-game?

Maybe this entire thread is a lesson in game management

It's okay, I forgive you

@ElkOil. Coaches at that level are the "type" as well. If they sense that you are looking to them for ANYTHING (respect, etc.), they will either play you like a fiddle, or tear you to shreds. Think about the person who is willing to scream profanities at 20 world class athletes in the clubhouse after the game. They are ridiculously good at reading people, and can sense weakness like a wolf. Good like trying to *earn* respect from them. You don't earn it; you just get it, or you don't belong at the level.
-
Marquez doesn't care how anyone sees him. If he did, he wouldn't be able to survive at that level. None of the MLB umpires care in any way shape or form what coaches, or players, or *you* think of them. That's simply the "type" that is able to work that level. If they weren't the "type", they would get torn to shreds in a heartbeat. In fact, this is pretty much the reality from JUCO on up.

I've got you @MadMax. I deleted both posts, because in light of that, I don't think they were appropriate. Not as an excuse, but as an aside, I don't know what happened with the quote system, but I've been having trouble getting it to work properly, so I can see how everything got jumbled together. The second post was uncalled for in the first place (although I think it's valid to say that the kind of umpire who gets defensive in an anonymous forum *may* be having similar issues on the field).

@ElkOil. You're not going to offend me with what you say. I just want to hear what you think. I'm also fine with leaving the discussion here if that's what you want to do.
