  1. WTF is going on with coaches and parents. Anyone else see the video of the coach tackling the ref then the mob fight. all because they did not like the calls. Sad. Is the game really worth that?? That is why I like baseball. Got the mask, chest protector. can't hurt me..
  2. call what you see. IF you have him not touching the plate and can back that up, I say call it. IF you have him touching the plate, end of discussion.. I give the black for a strike, so I am gonna give it for touching home plate too..
  3. Looks intentional to me to. But just after watching it several times. Live it probably would not look like it was, but could go either way. Kind of like tripping in football. He was down, he tried to stop the runner. Does not look like intent to hurt if that makes sense..
  4. I don't see anything wrong here. Some of you "umpire" types just take it way too seriously like people are going to treat you different because of how you look, when you show up and reading the rules on the field. Plus isn't being a Smart A$$ with your partner the proper way?? What are you getting paid or something here?? Before the flaming starts, this was totally sarcastic...
  5. Looks like a typical slide in softball at a younger age where they don't quite have it down on how to slide properly or aggressively. I think OUT here, not obstruction the girl could have gotten to the base if she slid a bit sooner and a different slide. I just can't justify taking away a good defensive play in that case..

    Coaches argument

When I coached, I did not even teach the kids that move. even though legal, because umpires always said it was a balk. UG..
  7. Behind the mound, I just stand straight up. Slot, Heel Toe actually.
  8. Politics of baseball are better left to the board, not umpires. Let them deal with it. You have the ultimate power to eject at the game if something is done warranting that. Otherwise, each game is a new game and should be called as such. If something happens that is worthy an ejection do it. YOU have that power. Then you don't have to deal with it any more that game.
  9. Someone should have ran out and helped her "across the street" or field as it is in this case. :angel4:

    My First!

It's an easy lesson to teach a kid. Next game he gets a big out at first maybe in the 4th inning tie game bases loaded. He will think twice about throwing the helmet. I am ok with the eject myself. What do you have to lose here by ejection.
  11. The ump who made the call had the catch, saw nothing else. (wrong, but what can you do??) Sounds like the changed call made the difference between 1 out and 2 outs due to Ump Error. Wouldn't the Ump have to "get help" to change this. Timing...
  12. When my son was about 15, he played in a home game where there was not an ump. I was coach so I did not do it. Ump we found did it with flip flops, shorts and T'shirt. he had a mask and a baloon. He took one right to the NADS. and was down for about 10 minutes. OUCH!!!
  13. Out with the left hand, Mask in right.. Very nice. Can you get those umpire pants in a just below the knee cutoff??
  14. IMHO R3 not out for Int, but out for abandonment. Maybe could have advised coach that you would talk about the play once players were back where they belonged?? Just to explain what you had.
  15. 18U game at very nice field. Night is beautiful. 2 teams from same town (population 150 or so). They are playing a 8PM game Under the Lights. R3 is tagging up on fly to F9. Play at the plate, I have R3 out by inches. He jumps up, throws helmet and says very loudly "bullSH*#". I eject right there. No more issues the rest of the game, ends 7-2. Kid approaches me after the game to apologize. All is well. Just a great night, and I think my ejection saved me from hearing from either team the rest of the game. :notworthy:
  16. I just keep the count on my fingers, who needs a clicker/indicator. It's not like there is much else going on that I need to watch. :BD:
  17. were his shoelaces hanging and maybe touched the plate? Would that count? i think touching the plastic is good enough for me. On the other hand, why would the runner not make sure on a HOME RUN that he stepped right in the Middle and leave no doubt.
  18. so you took 1 sentence to say what took me 6. Damn you are good. That was what I wanted to say..
  19. If he sees the play and can react does that make a difference? Headed to 1st base dugout straight from home? Headed across the back of the plate to 3rd base dugout? So many things involved to make it hard to determine. As I read it here I would have the INT. What if the runner that just scored is waiting to signal to the runner coming home which way to slide? Does where the throw goes have a part in the call? Obviously if it is not even close to the plate then you would not have INT.
  20. I just call Strike 3 on the third Strike. If it is an out and I know it was caught and the situation is correct where he may run then I will give "He's Out" after. Can you be wrong if you call "strike 3"? I don't think so. Nothing to change if it is dropped. If you call "Strike Three, He's out". Then you can be wrong and have to worry about change. On the first play, it is so hard to learn the right timing. But trust me, just like everyone else is saying here, WAIT to make the call. Nothing changes if you take 2 seconds to make sure nobody drops the ball before you call out. Then you don't have to look like you are changing a call when you change your out to safe because he dropped the ball. TIMING is so important, but it is the hardest to slow down... It will come with practice though..
  21. wow, maybe working alone most of the time is not so bad. :notworthy:

    Balk Question

It was 2 moves in my opinion. the kick then the move to first. That was my view of what happened. The pause differentiated the 2 movements for me and that was my reasoning for the balk. It was a foot movement towards first, back then step and throw to first..
  23. Don't they make special pads with Tape on them that you could stick inside your hat. Some even have "WINGS"

    Balk Question

This is gonna be difficult to describe, but here is a shot at it.. Lefty pitcher, R1. Pitcher is set, Lifts leg in pitching motion, kicks foot towards first then back towards his other leg (away from first) then throws to first. Is that a Balk?? He sort of did a leg lift, kick to first, very short pause then threw to first.. I called a balk on the play.
