The runners are not forced to advance until the BR touches 1B as I learned from my situation I posted yesterday. And as was posted earlier the BR must refuse before he is called out. LL is always interesting and WILL test your rules knowledge with some outlandish situations.

The announcers do go to the extreme and Buehrle did throw the glove. I didn't see the balk though. I would like to have seen the move from Joe West's side. It is difficult to say a call is wrong or right when you don't see the same angle as the umpire. Just my .02.

And I have now been enlightened. See these forums are useful to learn something also.

I agree. In real time, you just call what you see and move on. Dirtydawg, 99%?!? more like 99.9% if I can replay it 6 times in slow mo.:TD:

Say the BR proceeds halfway as was mentioned and everything else proceeds as OP. R3 scores, R2 gets thrown out for out 3. Now as team is celebrating, BR enters dugout. Is he then called out as he never touched 1B or must an appeal be made and must he be informed of his requirement to touch 1B? This play may never happen again, but since it did, I would like to know what should be done.

I agree minor league doesn't matter and according to rules game is over when BR touches 1B so good coaching. Along the same lines and the real reason for the question... R1, R2, R3, 2 outs, game tied, Bot of last inning. Batter receives a BB. If he never makes it to 1B, when can he be called out? According to LL 6.08a, provided said runner advances to and touches 1B. When has he abandoned his attempt to advance to and touch 1B? In my OP, I would have let play go and if appealed after the "3rd" out, I would have granted the "4th" out on appeal and negated the run.

The only thing we have had flying around the last two nights is MOSQUITOS. Texas-sized, blood thirsty, and Texas amounts. As in we called time in the middle of an inning to get sprayed.

I worked with a veteran on Monday night and his tip was to help with timing, verbalize all pitches. I took that as not swinging strikes though. So I tried it last night. As was previously stated, it worked well. On a swinging strike, I just pause and then indicate with the hammer. If it a swinging strike three and there is no uncaught 3rd strike rule, I give them the chainsaw. If it is called, chainsaw and verbal, strike three. With an uncaught, I will just indicate with the hammer and verbal or not depending on swinging or not.

As I watched this, I was wondering how much spit was exchanged. No way you can be that close yelling like that and not spray a little. :WTF

I thought the same thing. Who initiated the conference though? Knight seemed pretty confident in his call.

LLBB Minors. Our league has a 90 minute time limit in minors. Once time limit has been reached, there 1 batter. The PU announces "Last Batter" and the at-bat starts. If this batter is put out, game over. If this batter becomes BR with a hit or error, then the Defense can either try for an out or return the ball to the plate. Once the plate is touched with the ball in hand, game over. Now to the situation as was reported to me. I did not see and can only rely on information I was given. R2 and R3 2 out. Last batter is at-bat and receives Ball 4. BR starts to 1B but makes it about halfway and stops. R3 and R2 then start to advance. At this point I don't know where the ball is, but a play was attempted on R3 at home. Safe. R2 then proceeds to home and gets tagged out. BR still has not touched 1B. According to 6.08a, The batter becomes a runner and is entitled to first base without liability to be put out (provided said runner advances to and touches first base) when (a) four "balls" have been called by the umpire; base runners may advance. And according to our minor league ground rules, once 1B would be touched by the BR, game over. Now the question is, how long does the BR have to touch 1B? Also, if he has not touched the bag, Defense can appeal and the 3rd out would negate the run, correct?

I had one to end an inning last night. I'm PU working solo in LLSB Minors. BR hits ball to outfield, touches 1B and heads to 2B. I have followed her up the line and then proceed into the area between 1B and the circle. She touches 2B and takes about 2 steps off the bag as the throw comes in to F4. Alert F4 tags her and I ring her up. As the 1B coach walks by on his way back to the dugout he gives me a couple of claps and says good call blue. It is very seldom you get one of those, especially after you have just called his player out.

I didn't see Knight ask anything. From what I saw and what the talking heads said it seemed that Gibson just stepped in and said it hit the ground. Hard to tell if you weren't there watching it in real time.
-
Yes cleanly caught and plenty of rope given. The talking heads sure let Greg have it being that they are experts in umpiring and all. It is easy to watch the play 3 or 4 or 5 times in slow motion and say it was a horrible call. From Greg's view in real time, it probably did look like it was dropped.

I did my first game as an umpire this year. It was pretty nerve racking trying to remember all the rules. you only think you know them until you put on that blue shirt, then you MUST know them. Not to mention, I was PU for my very first game. Nothing like jumping in with both feet.
-
I started umpiring this year. After a few games behind the dish, I think every coach should have to take at least 2 games back there. It puts a whole new perspective on things.

I took a bat to the mask on Friday night. Was extremely glad I hadn't removed my mask on the hit ball, yet. That has been the worst so far. Other than that, just "normal" shots. I am new to the club and have taken a couple on the chin. They didn't seem to hurt as bad as I thought they would.

Had a similar situation in LLSB Majors. Batter ran on the uncaught 2ND strike and R2 and R3 advanced and scored. BR was then thrown out at 1st for an out. However, it was only strike 2 so she came back. Not having seen this or read any cases of this, I brought BR back as she only had 2 strikes and the OC put his runners back. I now know that was a legal advance and the run should have counted and R2 stayed at 3B. Defense should know what count is...I agree. Here's a question and a smart coach with good players could teach his batters this exact play. How do you decide if this was intentional and then what is the penalty? And another...uncaught 3rd strike with 1B occupied. BR, R1, etc advance. DC comes out and questions umpire and also OC and OC says "We learned that from _____, they do it all the time." Does this now come under intentional confusion?

Reason I let play commence is this was the next to last week in the season. If a 10yo doesn't know he can't lead off...Also I haven't read anywhere in my book about stopping play in LL BB when the runner leaves early. Now LLSB is different. Last night, LLSB Minors R3 comes off bag after pitch. When the catcher throws the ball back to the pitcher, she continues about 1/2 way to home. Pitcher is currently out of the circle and R3 is stopped on the line. Pitcher is paying R3 no mind and then steps into the circle. R3 just freezes for 2-3 seconds. PAYOWW. "Runners out". No complaint from coach.

I did the same thing the other day. I didn't complete my infield fly call though. I started with "Infield Fly" and my voice trailed off as fly came out.
-
Sometimes it doesn't matter how vocal you are. Last night in a Major LL game, bases loaded 1 out. Batter hits a popup to pitcher. Both PU and I were very vocal in our call of the Infield Fly. However, in all the commotion, I don't think anyone heard us. I was vocal and he was vocal and I barely heard him. My point being, sometimes it doesn't matter how loud you are, no one hears. Especially on the small field with young players. Every parent thinks they should be coaching and yells at the players.

I have seen this twice this year with both times a run coming off the board. Once LL Majors and the other LL Minors. First time, LL Majors R3 is leaving early every pitch. BU throws red signal flag every time. Even throws the flag at the feet of the 3BC. On the play that mattered, R3 leaves early, BR hits ball to pitcher. 1-3 OUT. BU calls time and puts R3 back on 3rd because he left early. No argument from OC as it was his son and he taught him to leave early. Second time, LL Minors, I'm PU with 2 BU. Bases loaded. As pitcher comes set, I notice behind him that R2 has a lead off about 4 feet off the base. Pitch is delivered and Ball 3 in the dirt, pass ball. All runners advance, safe at home. I call time and send them all back as R2 was off the base. I know it is the BU's call, but I couldn't help but see a leadoff in my line of sight. Again no argument from OC.
