  1. I thought all LL permitted the board to do on ejections was increase the suspension to more than one game? Is my memory wrong? You are correct, LL mandates a min of one game suspension. The BOD can not lower the one game, but they can increase it. All are correct here. Once a Manger/Coach is ejected, they are also suspended for the next game as well. A BOD can increase that suspension or even remove a coach from the league if they feel it's warranted. In my case, the EJ was legit as the Manager/Coach continued to argue Balls/Strikes even after the discussion had ended. What I experienced was LL politics at its worst. The Manger/Coach that I tossed was not only a BOD member but also the UIC for the league and a former President. He and the current BOD members (including the president) decided to ignore the rule requiring him to sit out the additional game and allow him to participate. My only recourse at that point was to approach the D/A and file a complaint. In my experience, at least with this administrator, he usually refers the issue back to the league president for resolution. It's circular logic that makes no sense but it is what it is. As I said above, I had one of two options; 1). Ignore it and continue to officiate for this group. 2). Stop working games for this league and move on. I went with option 2. Once a league goes down the road of cherry picking which rules to enforce or not, it creates chaos for those of us officiating. Fortunately I belong to several associations with many other opportunities. I suspect I will see this coach again however as he also coaches travel ball. Where is Rich on this????????????????? Would LL international like to know of incidents like this??????????????Direct violation of sportsmanlike conduct rules and penalties? Of course you probably run the risk of being blackballed or called a snitch or whistleblower and never work anywhere. Isn't it funny how doing the right thing gets you no where. Where are the Adult heroes. Where are the Adult people to look up to as examples. Once again, win at all cost, I only want an unfair advantage wins again. This is what the kids are learning. Great role models, yes sir re baby.
  2. The perfect play for those who like to watch the ball all the way into the glove and then glance down for the foot. They will get this one, but all the calls where the foot is still just barely in the air when the ball smacks the glove will always be safe (consistent though), and there are whole lot more bangers at first than there are the OP plays.

  4. Well, you guys went to the Regionals as recently as 2010 and you had the 4th winingest coach in baseball until 2006, so it ain't that bad. A little thumping on the Wahoos never hurt. Besides if you get tire of working out on the drill field you can always go to the duck pond.
  5. Why would someone umpire a game without a call from the UIL for those who work for the UIL or know about the UIL. If I receive a call from a coach, I will call the UIL to confirm that the UIL knows about this and I would also be asking the UIL why a coach is calling me and not them. What gives???????????? When should a call for not coming to a complete stop be enforced. If coming to a complete stop does not mess anyone up, why is that a rule. I figure if the runner at any base needs to know when to start running towards the next base or to home at the first possible instance for a squeeze play, then not stopping prevents the runner from getting that quick first jump, it causes it too be delayed just a fraction and the pitcher gains the advantage. When is the complete stop rule to be enforced. I am confused.
  6. Show all the plays all over the country by "those" umpiring who keep blowing calls so that we can see which ones seem to cause the most problems so maybe we can figure out not only how to help "these" umpires in the OP but also "those" umpires all over the country who are blowing this play and all the other ones all over the country. It doesn't just happen where the OP play came from, but all levels of professional umpires working both professional athletes and amateur athletes.
  7. Congratulations to all. http://ncaabaseball.arbitersports.com/Groups/105039/Library/files/13ArbiterRegionals.pdf http://ncaabaseball.arbitersports.com/Groups/105039/Library/files/13ArbiterS-Reg.pdf http://ncaabaseball.arbitersports.com/Groups/105039/Library/files/13ArbiterCWS.pdf All umpires will receive a flat fee regardless of the number of games worked. Umpires will be paid $1,600 for regional competition; $1,125 for super regional competition; and $4,162 for the CWS. Your lodging expenses (excluding incidentals) will be reserved by and billed directly to the host institution or the NCAA (CWS). All umpire game fees, travel and per diem ($45 each day beginning with arrival date and ending with departure date) will be rei mbursed by the NCAA Airline luggage expenses for a maximum of two bags may also be reimbursed All umpires are required to use the NCAA travel service if air travel is necessary. **Best deal--2 games in SR=$560 per game. Wow, only Drury, Dulin, Furlong, Judkowitz, Maiden, Morehead, and Wilkerson have not worked a Regional. That's only 7 new guys out of 96 with their first trip to the rodeo. Tough to break in with that kind of job security for the Veterans. And we talk about the Pros. Not much difference IMHO. They can do what they want and I am not arguing, but just happened to notice. Remember, NCAA does not do a "true merit system" with these 3 rounds like some people would complain about, just like they do not do a true merit system with MLB. They do not want the umpires working the CWS to be working all 3 rounds. Therefor the CWS list comes from those working in the Regionals, not the Super Regionals. They take time off during the Super-Regionals after working the Regionals, and come back to work the WS. No matter, it is an honor to work the playoffs, period. Good luck to all, veterans and newcomers. PS---and good luck to all those chosen for the Conference Tournaments going on this week.
  8. After SWMBO gives you a hickey??????????????
  9. Where is someone from the UIL on this site to explain why the UIL would not send umpires and what happens when games are worked without going through them and how many schools do not go through them. Do both of these schools use 2 separate groups for their regular season games. Inquiring minds want to know??
  10. Type A awards the obstructed runner a mandatory minimum one base in advance of his last legally touched at the time of OBS. Other than that required award for A, the umpire can give an obstructed runner additional bases at discretion. Type B is the "nullify the act" rule. So in answer to your question, in Type A OBS, the obstructed runner is always awarded at least one base, the umpire has to judge whether that runner is entitled to a subsequent base and in Type B OBS, the umpire has to judge whether to award the runner any advancement at all. In regards to this play, BR is obstructed before he touches first base, so the mandatory minimum award is first base. U1 could decide BR doesn't get second and therefore the out call stands (ball is alive, hit to outfield). So if he runs into the first baseman "after" he touches first as he makes his turn (sometimes a wimpy turn, sometimes a bigger turn just in case the ball goes through the wickets) on a hit to the right fielder, he gets second base even though he "never" had any intention of going to 2nd unless the ball got by the right fielder. Not true under OBR and NCAA OK, now under the mechanics for this. Since it was MLB the 2BU called the runner out, then he was told of the obstruction, and he put the runner on 2nd. In a 2 man, since the BU calls the obstruction at 1st, when the runner arrives at 2nd and is tagged, do you call out like the 2BU did in the OP, then call time and then tell the runner to stay because of the obstruction. Or, do you call time and then place the runner when he is tagged for the out? How is this handled in a 2 man?

  12. Don't forget, if this had been the same situation on a triple, or a inside the park HR, it would be handled the same way, either awarded third base or awarded home as the case may be, or would this be wrong. Does the umpire not have to "make a judgment" as to how much distance the runner was held up in making his decision?? What if this runner was out by 20 feet but the ump thought the obstruction only held him up 10 feet? In other words, after seeing the obstruction and calling it (which could be a no brainer), does that mean the runner would always get awarded the next base or does the umpire have to judge (the hard part) how much (distance) he was obstructed or is he protected no matter what to the next base?
  13. Here is what Showalter had to say http://www.masnsports.com/school_of_roch/2013/05/showalter-says-umpires-got-it-right.html Look in the 7th paragraph. "I don't want to argue about something that I don't have a good argument about and lose credibility"
  14. So, he is basically trying to tell you that once you select the style (windup or set) you are going to use, you are locked into that style no matter what??? Wrong. He wants to read it that way so he gets that stolen base no matter what if he has a runner on the base and the pitcher messes up by going to the windup position. He does not want him to be able to correct that initial mistake. This would make that steal very easy for his runner if the pitcher was now forced to use the windup. Think of it like this. If the 3rd baseman switches to play first and momentarily (as soon as he gets there) forgets to yell for the dugout to bring his 1st baseman's glove, he is allowed to call time and have someone bring the new glove out. He is not forced to use the 3rd base glove for one play before he can ask for time to get the new glove.

  16. Tell the catcher to get back further in the right hand batter's box and take away that run, by knocking him off the plate. What a whiner. That lead left foot gets in easily as he did not block that leg and foot off, although he did block off the tucked back right foot.
  17. Here's another one. What would Bob do? This is what MLB want's the MLBU's to do. Just sit there and take it. That's what all the sports want us to do. This is what it looks like when one does not take care of business. Remember this guy officiating when they write about him at his retirement about being "firm" but fair, and about how player's knew he meant business, etc etc. and all those other high appraisals. What a bunch of crapola. http://deadspin.com/viktor-troicki-has-cameraman-help-with-epic-tirade-agai-507679207
  18. UIC You pretty much nailed it. There are at least 30 openings since both low A long season staffs are all short season promotions with no returnees. If others from 2012 short season retired or were released there would be more openings. The short A season "has not" started yet. But, why quibble, it will start after the June (6-8) draft, usually around June 18-22, or in time to get in a 70 game season. Now for 570: Now, if there was only one profession in the world, then we could guarantee the best of the best for that one profession. More money could increase the pool of applicants for all professions, not just umpiring. There are some people who would argue that no relatives whatsoever should be allowed to pursue another relatives career due to the potential for favoritism, or potential for a conflict of interest. That way, if the individual did not make it, that individual could not cry that they were not promoted for fear of showing favoritism. Also if they did make it, other people could not say they only made it because of their relative. Darned if you do darned if you don't. So, you shouldn't even try a relatives profession, go find your own profession and own it. For those who think like this, good thing that is not the thinking for the DiMaggio family. Since Vince made it first we would never had known Joltin Joe or Dom DiMaggio. What about the Alou family? No Mike Piazza since Lasorda drafted him dead last as a favor to the family. For umpires, there would have been no Paul Runge since dad Ed made it first, no Jerry Crawford since Shag made it first. No umpire ever promoted themselves, someone else promoted them. They just worked the games. They have plenty of time to decide on the umpires they hire for the staff. Many get a look but do not get hired. So in essence that is how they fire umpires who do not measure up. It is the people who hire the MiLBU who are to blame if one wants to play the blame game. The umpire just works the game and then the ones who do the hiring decide who is the best. The umpires do not pick themselves. The Commissioner can jump in any time he sees fit and invoke, "in the best interest's in baseball" if something is not right. He can inquire about anything in baseball. He can go find out anything about a MiLB umpire. He could go ask all the MiLB managers who is the best and totally go around any umpiring department or Joe Torre or whomever to get the best of anything for MLB. Just don't blame the guy who is working the games. Somebody else selected that individual, not that individual themselves. Maybe those in charge do not know what a MLBU really is. Lance Barrett worked his first MLB game at 25 years old. At 27 he worked 104 games for probably 80-100k. Are doctors through with all their schooling by 27? Are they making 80-100k and above immediately on the way to around 400k without being a specialist. At one time Senior umpires made 60% more (170k to 110K) than the MLB player minimum for a guy who rides the pine all year. If the same were true today, that would be 800k for Senoir umpires There is no perfect system. If you are the greatest thing since sliced bread and the Babe Ruth of umpiring you will make it. If not, you will not. Only 1 opening is needed. However, there are only 68 jobs as opposed to how many in various other jobs throughout the world. If you are the best, the world is your oyster, if not, the chips just fall where they may for everyone no matter the occupation.
  19. Here would have been your report on me. dumbdumb was ejected for yada yada yada. He immediately left the LL site ( and that means not going in the public street or just outside the boundary and continuing to observe the game even though off the site). The league sent me a letter that he was suspended from his following game, which was last night at 8. (Fri, 5/17). "I was told dumbdumb was no where to be found for the game". Other coaches have sat in the neighbors yards across the street from the left field fence, maybe 300 feet from the dish, "but dumbdumb did not do this". That being said. I had 2 games to today, the ejected manager, dumbdumb/board member was there. I walked straight up to him, shook his hand and said, "You and I OK"? He said yes, and I said thanks and continued to the field I was assigned.
  20. Where is Rich?????? In LL terminology, what does, must not be present at the "game site" mean. For me it would be any area-(including the parking lot) that the LL owned but that is why I am asking Rich who knows LL rules, philosophies and exactly what every word means. I would assume (or maybe not) each League may allow a certain area to go to on the owned property as talked and agreed upon at the League meeting. Maybe DTM could have more specifics included in his presentation to the board as the UIC of this League for next year. Just try and make it a more black and white issue for everyone involved during the game. Once the game is over, if he is allowed back for his BOD duties as per LL rule, then of course he should be allowed. How are the words to this to be interpreted Rich and how do you handle it at your complex.
  21. First, I want all players to subscribe to every single recommendation also, "all the time" before we have umpires subscribe. Why suddenly start offering more money because ex players should get involved. Why not more money for non players that are there now. Got to give ex players more money eh. I wondered what would drive a higher paycheck. You could add more money to any profession and make it more attractive and increase the pool of applicants. If we bump a guy out after making 3 or 4 bad calls, heck, everyone will get the opportunity to be a MLBU. I'll just wait till that last group of people, which will include me, on earth get the call, it will not be long. Oh heck, just do like Japan and grab the public address mike and just apologize all day long for everything. Nice 24 hour games. I'm so sorry, I apologize for being born, etc. etc.!!!! Cripes!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why do we need so many openings. Since we all know that each one of us is the best umpire on the planet (and we all should think that way or we are not worth our salt), then there only need be 1 opening. In the old days when one could skip, only need to wait 4-6 years, now it can be done after waiting 8 years. How many doctors are making 125K in their 9th year of schooling at 27 years old like a MLBU could with the current system in place? Not every player umpire is going to get to stay long so where is the incentive if you cannot have a 20 year career, unless they pay the 500k a rookie bench warmer can make just in case they fire you after only a couple years and you have been in the minors as a player for a lot of years.
  22. Oh boy, here it is. Keep it professional, not personal. Let's not get locked up from the moderators. First, I want all players to subscribe to every single recommendation also, "all the time" before we have umpires subscribe. http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/9278742/eight-ways-improve-umpiring-mlb Oh heck, just do like Japan and grab the public address mike and just apologize all day long for everything. Nice 24 hour games. I'm so sorry, I apologize for being born, etc. etc.!!!! Cripes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  23. This is a great lesson. I will tell you that it is more of an art than a science. Where less-experienced umpires make the mistake is that they invent rules to create common sense, fair play, and advantage/disadvantage where if they would've simply enforced the rule "as written" common sense, fair play, ad/dis would've played out. But that's what happens when they don't know the rule. (I'm not saying in the case of the OP)...but it takes a lot of experience to "umpire with the rule book" something that I'm still practicing. Many things lend credence to the old saying "experience is the best teacher"
