from a post above-wonder who the new crew chief will be and the fill in moving up? not a change but ready to go article https://www.news-journalonline.com/story/sports/mlb/2026/01/13/mlb-umpire-hunter-wendelstedt-injury-spring-training/88140624007/

yes he did skip A or low A but not advanced A. he was scheduled to go to the Midwest League which listed as just an A league in 2020 rather than an A-advanced League at the time in 2020 and is listed on the staff, but that was a covid year and MiLB did not play. in 2021 both Willie and his partner Adam Pierce went to High A East as evidenced by their game on September 1, 2021 in Asheville vs Greenville. Pierce had skipped from a 2nd year in the Rookie Advanced Appalachian League after being there in 2019 while Willie was in the NY Penn League (you will not find Willies name mentioned on the 2021 High A East or any of the other A Leagues on the Steve the umps site, so i went back to a game September 1, 2021 and there were Willie and Adam both as partners. Willie worked Texas League in 2022 and Eastern League in 2023 before promotion to AAA in 2024. now, lately the fastest trajectory had been 2 umpires, one umpire out of baseball now and Gabe Morales who both started in 2009 and worked a year and a half 2012-2013 in AA and were promoted to AAA in the last half of the year 2013. then on to Arizona Fall League in 2013 and Spring Training 2014 and then a full fill in with a 123 game season in 2014, or in other words their first full year in triple A and only having about 10-15 AAA plate jobs before being given a major schedule as a fill in MLB, at the beginning of their 6th year in pro ball. Years ago John P. McSherry went from the Carolina League to the International League skipping AA entirely. Same for Ed Montague going from the California League to the PCL. So it is not unheard of, and many umpires at the top of the class went right to Long A ball and got to skip the short season leagues altogether. many times they just spent 1 year at A and 1 year at AA before moving into AAA where they work before getting the call. but, with his first year as a fill-in, in his 7th year of pro ball, and 66 games, Willie looks to be in a good position going forward. no guarantees, just as was mentioned in this OP. Riggs worked 128 games as a fill in one year and now apparently is released after only 2 last year. however, recently if you find someone working 140 or more games in a fill in season, those have all gone on to make it, as have others not working that total.

Full ABS for every pitch, not a challenge system https://dodgerblue.com/rob-manfred-mlb-umpires-prefer-full-automated-strike-zone-over-challenge-system/2025/12/03/

well, per this article of at least 20 plate appearances, 31 umpires finished below 94.0% correct per 100 pitches. therefor, i guess 50 umpires finished at 94 or above. so, with basically 81 umpires at 92.0 or above, what about only 2 challenges for each team per game, or 4 total per game in 2026. is half the worst miss rate per 100 hundred pitches enough when there are 150-200 pitches per game, too many, or too little. should they split the difference and make it 6? or go with a full 8, or make it unlimited. 8 or unlimited would help for a skewed game where an umpire is unintentionally/accidentally missing more on one team than another, and 8 challenges or unlimited would also help in those game instances where the misses are lower than 92 percent. how much skin (sounds like stock options in business) should each side have in the games. more skewed towards the teams or more skewed towards the umpires for being perfect, or what is the perfect number (i use the word perfect because umpires are suppose to be perfect and still get better every year). And the number of challenges per team should be precise and perfect). or, do you start at 2, with the option of going higher or lower, and if the 2 challenges get changed will it go higher or lower as long as we do not go to full ABS with umpires calling out the pitches using an earpiece giving them the call on every pitch. https://athlonsports.com/mlb/final-grades-are-in-here-are-the-5-worst-mlb-umpires-for-2025

since no one responded, with googling the nchsaa and looking under supervisors it looks like you would be in the 'capital area'. go straight to the horses mouth. since i googled this person and found some articles on his career, it would seem that he would be able to help you or steer you in the right direction, based on whatever you want to know, since you would be coming from another state. he is in the nc hall of fame, so he probably has more contacts than he can count. https://www.nchsaa.org/regional-supervisors/

yep. but in the old days without replay, the field umpire was required to go all the way out to the wall and inspect to make sure the ball was lodged and the outfielder was not deking/pull a fast one, on the call. players are taught to raise their hands if the ball lodges. if they go ahead and play the ball, that would indicate (by looks) the ball had not lodged because why would a player taught to raise their hands if it was lodged, make a play on the ball if it wasn't lodged. anyway. replay took care of this situation. even if the player made a play on a ball that they thought or were sure it was lodged, but worried the umpire might rule it was not lodged. damned if you do and damned if you don't possibly. some of the good things about replay review now. nice get/example there @johnnyg08

ya liked that one, did you. well, everyon oops many here (umpire empire) talk about getting the best umpires to get the best results, so just thought i would propose a solution. and umps did work like that at one time. and treat it like a called infield fly that everyone lets drop. you dont have to go anywhere, but if you do you put yourself in jeopardy. and why do a lot want to bust on the pros. it is the level of play. lets have people on here show their 3-5 inch misses and goofy play with a video. where are they. and our scorecards. and that pitch review percentage of overturns for pitchers catchers and batters requests looks awful to me, not even 70%. and so why did everyone let this graph below fly, from 10-13 pass. what??? you get a pass, one off, based on the score (living with the angels).

dang--looked like a hitters umpire to me---13 strikes called balls versus 7 balls called strikes. I am use to seeing that the other way around. why is that all through the season. why not have a 2 to 1 favor of missed strikes called balls. why do umpires miss the other way usually. calling 13 balls strikes and 7 strikes balls. what's been going on for years and years. imagine this is the same at all levels. give the hitters a break. the pitchers already get an extra pitch before walking a batter. why do they need extra help. doesn't it take the ball being hit to have the maximum amount of action in a game. and just let the best umpire work all 7 games behind the plate every day just like Klem did. and if you want to be nice 2 best umpires working every other day. this would include the college world series.

PU stats from the divisional series from lowest to highest score--strictly total accuracy, not by most impactful, courtesy of ump scorecards. we know every single stinking pitch is impactful to start with for every game ever played, because it changes the whole dynamics of every single at bat, and therefor the dynamics of that game. From pitch one, any missed pitch totally ruins that game because of a, what if scenario, for every batter/pitcher, and either the pitcher or batter will be scarred for life. Do we even need analytics to tell us this, since the founding of baseball many many years ago. Should have made things even on the pitchers/batters to start with, ie 3 balls is a walk or 3 strikes is an out. Why give the pitcher 7 pitches to throw and get 3 strikes instead of 6 if you love seeing the batter hit the ball, and hitting the baseball is the toughest thing in all of sports (so it is written/they say). oh well. Just remember for next year, baseball did have the option of having all pitches called by ABS, rather than the challenge system and umpires agreed to this. So, if they want to belly ache, with the challenge system, go cry to management and commissioner who wants the challenge system, don't take it out on the umpires. Tell boone to get on the horn to the commissioner rather than umps (especially call up umpires), If he uses his challenges unwisely, or uses them up entirely and then wants to go argue later. I bet that phone in the dugout will go to commissioner's office 1-800-commissioner. of course it adds a little strategy on when to use the challenge system, just like there are other baseball strategies used as the game progresses. last night at second. 1. if he just runs straight to the base no effort to avoid or peal off or slide (risking taking one in the face), no movement whatsoever, what 'would' MLB have for the call. 2. looks like he 'jumps up' in the air skyward, rather than raise hands up skyward, turns head and body and takes the hit to back of helmet. would all the levels, LL, MS, HS, HSjv, Collegiate, MiLB and any other leagues or travel ball have interference. what about scenario 1. what would all leagues have with just straight, no movements at all and risking hit to the face, as their call. 3. so without the vertical leap in the air would this be legal, with just a head turn.

so when the ball goes up, just have the whole infield yell at each (like the walton family good night), i can't find/see it, i can't find/see it, while stumbling around, then when it drops, grab the ball and start a double play. acting school at its best other than jeters, it hit me, it hit me, hand fake out. i think the old days did it better and this would have been IFF and nobody would have argued. just the batter being called out and runners staying at their base (unless they wanted to gamble on the fielder not catching the ball), and you could use each players fielding abilities rather than the average, so you had to know your personnel. Ozzie Smith got a wider birth for ordinary effort versus the average player ordinary effort. what was ordinary for the Oz, would not have been ordinary for others and that was taken into account. and i believe what i just put above was not written in the book but that was how the old guy that went to the ump school explained it back then. you only had ordinary effort, there was nothing about of the average player at their level part. oh well the mlb response. and the supervisor in the article won a NASO award if i remember right from reading back in the day articles here and there. https://www.mlb.com/news/why-the-infield-fly-rule-was-not-called-for-cubs-brewers-in-nlds

at exactly what point are umpires suppose to wait and call verbally and point the infield fly rule, as learned at the umpire schools, since many of the instructors are MLB. is it suppose to be when the ball reaches the apex of its parabola, or shortly thereafter. or is it suppose to be called when the ball is at the halfway point of its apex going up or halfway on its descent. just where is that point for it to be called when it is called.
