  1. all right, here is the motherload. go back to NL League Championship game 4 between Philadelphia(V) and Houston(H). Start the 4th inning at 44:00. is doug harvey, future hall of famer, doing the scissors or starting with a scissors and dropping that knee to the ground, which is in another discussion recently on stances. watch those pickoffs with ed vargo who would become the national league umpiring supervisor upon retirement. how did he work behind the plate. oh the scissors. could something have been going on during that time span. just made me start thinking. watch the next batter get a base hit and now runners are on 2nd and 1st. so, here we go at 52:00. watch closely on the 1-2 pitch to maddux at 52:19. basically same play as OP but back to the pitcher. so watch the star studded crew work on this for the next 15 minutes and then watch the last words to chub feeney up to 1:08.30. see how everything was handled for a 15 minute span. so reading on some old officiating.com or some similar sites or random articles, and similar googled items. it looks like some of the umpires who were tall went to the knee to relieve the pressure on the back. now you got to remember tall was pretty much 6 foot and over back in the day. so mcclelland, brinkman, harvey and some others would go down on the knee. the one blast/criticism on the knee was that it looked lazy, and obviously the quicker you could get out of it, the better it looked, but that lazy tag still floated around, but once again apparently it relieved some of the back pressure versus the scissors. some guys were good with the scissors like vargo who was not as tall. now, somewhere there is mention of the insurance issue because some stats were showing (only someone who had them, the insurance company, the disability company etc. who knows), found out the scissors was not helping healthwise. nothing goes into that very deeply factually, just alluded to, and probably rightfully so. but, now, most work like crawford did, cuzzi does, west did, etc. there are some who might have received a grandfather clause or something who knows. but most no longer work the scissors (i am sure i am forgetting several who do) as it is more healthy not to work it, so they say, or are forced not too now if an insurance issue is involved. enjoy the game and see what you think below (hang with the whole incident) compared to the OP. some mention of this is the kind of play you just can't handle with IR or some type of TV review. did cosell say that. Misters, Harvey, Vargo, Crawford, Engel, Tata and Froemming. everyone except Crawford had at least 1 WS and Vargo with 3. this was Crawfords 1st LCS and he would go on to work 11 more and 5 WS.
  2. management E for not letting the play be a reviewable call.
  3. just like something i heard about the air force, u will always have a roof over your head. volleyball, basketball pretty much yes, football, soccer, lacrosse, field hockey, baseball no. there is a lot of opportunity. middle school, high school, ncaa, olympic, usa travel. yes it is more women than men, but those women's scholarships can help good ole dad out. several others on here work it, and i think @yawetag from the old days was giving it a try, which is when i googled about volleyball.. i just like watching it, but you might want to try it like kevin k said. good luck if you do.

    Foul Poles

there can be situations where the rule of imaginary lines equals imaginary arguments. shut an argument down pronto. and when that city/etc has trouble eyeballing home to first, one just might want to play the line up to the base at which point the base takes over, and i am talking places with no crew on site to make them redo the line, if that thought even crosses your mind.
  5. just so new jersey does not feel picked on. here is another one from texas and with the ladies. https://www.aol.com/lifestyle/field-brawl-high-school-softball-173140419.html
  6. nice little article. only place i have seen $$$ mentioned https://wtop.com/local/2025/04/working-capital-3-major-league-baseball-umpires-call-dc-area-home/ and the umps care auction is up. you never know when an umpire or player will be a future HOF and you have a signed ball, hat, jersey etc. some game packages are in there and some autographed home plates are there. just a note about the plate you will see with the black border. that is the plate that was pretty much used for years for different levels of play. it used to be perfectly OK to call a pitch on the black a strike. even hitters would ask, you got that on the black ump, and if you said yes, the batter would just give an okay nod, and play on, said the old guy i talked with. nowdays it can start a major altercation. https://www.mlb.com/news/mlb-umpires-hosting-17th-annual-umps-care-charities-online-auction old article where ubberoth got involved in dispute https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/sports/1984/10/08/umpires-back-ueberroth-to-rule/5c2030b9-215d-4cd2-9133-405b14ec2ec4/ other old articles https://sabr.org/journal/article/interview-with-rich-rieker-director-of-umpire-development/ https://sabr.org/journal/article/interview-with-umpire-observer-kevin-oconnor/
  7. enjoy . over the years SI has had some interesting umpire articles. this is from last month. https://www.si.com/mlb/umpire-school-new-era-increased-scrutiny and here is an old one from the vault below https://vault.si.com/vault/1987/04/06/what-ever-happened-to-the-strike-zone
  8. you mean you do not recognize Supervisor and future WWF referee Larry Young behind the plate for this cleveland at baltimore game May 13, 1998, per retrosheet. Ogea was the pitcher and Anderson solo homered in the 1st and 4th off Ogea. with Mr. Drew Coble at 1B, Mr. Dale Ford at 2B, and Mr. Ted Hendry at 3B. Mr Coble was the Crew Chief. Mr. Ford, off season D1 basketball official and future tennessee state representative, and Mr Hendry never became Crew Chiefs. just remembering some old internet story about Ford throwing 'Weaver' out during the anthem. now to your question. i think i saw @lawump working, or a still internet picture of, a Legion game in the scissors. i bet dollars to doughnuts he would have that knee scoop and total history of working the knee for you since he works the scissors and the timeline you gave.
  9. for people out there that think umpires at all levels, from pro to t-ball, should never have to eject someone unless they are 'umpiring incompetent', go ahead and share and enlighten us on how none of this would even come close to happening in a game you worked. where are the verbal judo guys on the exact words spoken that would always prevent this from happening, 100% of the time if you had this game. and don't give me that boys will be boys crap. lets hear the 100% ways of umpiring that guarantee this never happening in a game anyone would work. a little game film help at these same game slots from johnny08, the film guru could probably help too. and it looks like their is carryover from 2 years ago. yes we can discuss the handling of the incident, but i am talking about this not happening at all, ever. https://brobible.com/sports/article/virginia-tech-north-carolina-baseball-ejections/
  10. yep, all of the WS crew from 2024 were in that range as u well know. Mr. MiZ uno. accent on the MiZ Not Mi Zuno. accent on the Zuno as u well know
  11. don't forget, brian started as a call-up in 2001, so he has been up for 24 years. he worked 675/6 games call up games before being hired full time in 2011. so those call up years work out to 6 full years on the field now, since a lot of guys work 111-114 games per year on the field and 21 games in IR, compared to pre IR when they worked 134-135 games on the field per season. and yes, some crews work 2 weeks of IR and some 3 weeks now.

  13. little history/memory lane here- did i not see a guy, loduka- that lost a lawsuit to an ump, and not quite sure how missed call on galarraga call comes under cheating. the old addage, if you ain't cheatin, you ain't tryin, comes to the fore. enjoy. 16 minutes, grab some peanuts and a refreshment and enjoy.

    reminder

for those of you who like to go watch an ncaa d1 game in your area every now and then, just remember that at least some teams do not play on easter sunday. instead of a fri, sat, sun for a 1 game each day situation, it changes to thurs, fri, sat for the series game each day. https://cbua.arbitersports.com/front/103681/Site/Information/Compensation-Structure
  16. kind of an article that speaks to that old 2016-2022 contract that 200k was starting salary and 524k was ending salary before new contract was signed that i cannot figure out how to post and had to do the 30 year scale by hand. https://hoopdojo.com/nba-referee-salary/ https://boardroom.tv/nba-referees-cba-nbra/
  17. is that 64% overturn call rate, on the calls that do go to IR. or does that include the hand up hold sign to take a look, and then they do not give the headset review sign. are the holds but no IR added into your stats. if not, why not, because that means the umps got it right, or stands which counts the same (as not a overturn) and would 'up' the confirmed percentage and lower that overturn percentage rate.
  18. if throwing a glove at the ball to see if the glove nicked the ball could be IR'd, and i do not know if that play is, then you would think maybe this one would be also.
  19. you are the man j08 not if you missed too many at 3b, you would get bumped totally out. and if hp was $400k 1b 100k, 2b 85k, and 3b 70k. everyone is always swearing they all are perfect where they work or they get fired, well here is a way umps would get demoted or fired just like the 3 nfl mentioned and 9 others not mentioned, out of 12 referees in the article did, or at least demoted.
  20. when will the above, title, hire by position just like nfl, then you can do this. pay by position and move back down to another position. pay by position. hp the highest pay per game, then 1bu, 2bu, 3bu. and if you are not doing well, you get moved down a slot. https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nfl/referee-tra-blake-is-reassigned-to-umpire/ar-AA1Cmd9Y?ocid=BingNewsSerp
  21. not going after, like the title said, interesting. hope he goes another 22. no problem.
  22. no they have very good regular jobs that may or may not have the old traditional defined benefit legacy pensions. some have their own businesses, but this is an advocation, just like working high school, college or travel ball. but, at that price point for some ncaa guys, they have plenty to set aside and just go buy berkshire hathaway b stock, or throw into a into an index fund like warren is leaving his wife. some in the past have had their own plane to fly to games, ie ed hightower. nice gig if you can get it. or like the steratores that own their own business and work the nfl and then college mens and womens hoops in the off season. and i used the term w2 since more would identify with that term rather than 1099 which is what they get.
  23. you do know that baseballs is around 25-27 years to the top. it was reported many years ago in an article that mentioned derryl cousins pay after 27 years which was the top. now, they may have lowered, getting to the top, by now, or just made the retirement earlier and better. notice how most umpires get the 25 years in. dutch rennart mentioned getting the 20 years in for the pension, in talks with bill white in bill whites book. so, you could have the pension in effect before reaching the top of the pay scale. and basketball had jack neis and dick bavetta working into their 70's, and the senoir guys are making 7-9k per game. but hell, some d1 guys like the ones you are watching on march madness are working over 100 games a year and bringing home some 250-350k w2s and maybe close to 400k
  24. no, the 30 years of step raises are from the last year of the old nba contract that ended in 2022, (2016-2022). the lower comparison was from the first year of that 7 (2016)year contract for each step. you get the basics of how the contracts are written but wnba is nowhere near those rates. the contract in the first post has the wnba rates. the nba comparison is the one i manually did from the original 2016-2022 nba contract i found. like i said, i apologize that copy and paste worked for the wnba contact to be posted here, but would not work for the nba contract.
  25. just googling the name brought up the the outdated list you so correctly mentioned which was from 2020 i believe. but, are the national coordinators mentioned above born in 1947 or earlier?
