per mlbu media guide umpires for WC and DS are to be notified 1 week before the last game of the regular season which it looks like is Sunday the 28th. so, that means all the DS guys that are notified Sunday know they are in the hunt for a WS. The WC guys know the are in the hunt for a LCS. now, does someone get the WS on their first try in the WC or DS? usually there is a build from WC or DS to LCS and then WS per what the past records show. and being in replay counts. hopefully nobody has one of those negative thingamabobits or what some call a clostraduck during this last weekend that riles the world of baseball up, (but that clostra could also be a positive) and also that nobody who is really in the hunt, gets dinged in the mask, and has to go on concussion protocol for 15 days with just pure bad luck timing. believe that has happened before. good luck to all.

from watching sports at the local high school every once in a while and some free reading and listening to moms who use to play make comments, i would say there is much less animosity/adversarialistness/ attitude towards officials in volleyball (and there is only womens volleyball in my area), swimming and even though i have not been in a long time, track & field. and you do not have to worry about getting out so quick in your career with mobility issues or injury issues. in volleyball, if you can learn what the libero can and cannot do and a few illegal positioning/screens/setups/ by the defense prior to the serve and dont call the ponytail touching the net a net violation, and make sure a backline player stays behind the line if spiking a ball 'above the net', you can go a long way..of course handling the ball violations is another area just like palming in hoops. and yes, there is much more to it than that, but if you learned baseball you can learn the others. i think yawtag on here a while ago went the volleyball route and i would hope is doing well. in swimming, if you do stroke and turn(legal/illegal for both), and can figure out what a badly performed legal stroke is from a well performed illegal stroke (benefit of doubt goes to the swimmer), you can work a lot there as well, as well as know all the rules and be a starter, making sure your cadence can't be taken advantage of, and checking for leaving to soon (like tag up in baseball and leaning with the body before the foot leaves the blocks does not count as leaving too soon, only when foot is off too soon is there a penalty) on relays (foot off the blocks before swimmer in water touches wall/pad). and track would seem to be a lot like swimming, but would have its nuances also. volleyball and swimming are all indoors, no protective clothing needed and of course there are travel ball like teams in each sport. and should you want to try for the most dinero, there are d1,2,3 opportunities for each as well as olympic opportunities in both mens and womens. ps- good luck with water polo, have never even come close to figuring that one out. where is johnny weissmuller when you need him, but it is an indoor sport, ie no rainouts. added- gonna need more officials due to growth for high school boys playing teams now. https://www.usatoday.com/story/life/health-wellness/2025/09/08/is-volleyball-good-for-you/85986035007/?tbref=hp

will speculate on this one-- maybe all the vacations might be done and the regulars would be back for the home stretch so to speak or in replay, and graduations, etc and summer vacation for their personal week would be over. and make sure those in consideration for playoffs are working. good time to bring up some that are being up for the first time to get some games, especially if they are moving some rovers around for teams that are still in the hunt or positioning for playoffs, and let some of the young ones get less pressure games with teams out of the hunt. same things as amateur player assignors would probably do.

well, she did better than 3 others that day (10th), although all of them were in the 92 with a decimal after, and she did better than 4 yesterday (11th), including 2 that had scores of 89.02 and 88 respectively. but as time goes on, she should have some higher scores and lower scores than her opening score, just like everyone else.

pretty much (not saying one was missed) in more recent times no umpire working 140 or more games in a season has not been hired at some point, ie tomlinson during 2024 after a 140 + season. and of the 2 you mentioned with hanahan looking like being more of the phenom, who have also been up all year, it would be just a matter of time hopefully, although there are no guarantees on anything. it is not where you start but where you finish that counts. and dont forget mr knight started as a callup in 2001 and 675 games later in 2011 went full tlme after having a 150 game call up season in 2009. and checking opening day march 27 in washington and marquez with the only TBA for a 4th crew member showing on the early preseason crew charts, and it ending up being Ramos, was that a prelude/planned/tell sign (james bond)? to what 'might' be going to happen later this season. only the shadow knows.

now you are getting into a specific area that could be like the discussion going on about 'how did we get here' in mechanics section, but specifically on the who, what, when, where why of ejection competence. maybe the umpire would have, but there is a 'keep them in the game' undercurrent/underpinning to all level of sports now, where the tie goes to the (player, and on up the heirarchy AC, HC/manager) with issues of deportment, compared to the bad old days of egotistical, headline seeking, force yourself into the game umpire. the game is not about you the umpire, it is about everyone else on the field. once again, there is an inflection point in all deportment--visual/showing you up, verbal (personal profanity), and time (length of argument) limits in which for better or worse, you just have to umpire, when a casebook play just cannot be written up or the casebook would be so big/voluminous (is that a word?), you could never get out of the classroom and onto the field to even play or umpire an athletic event, because you are playing, 'but what if' all your life.

just remember, at lower levels with amateur players, these player/coach/manager personnel with parents and fans confrontations, and spewing their venom, is losing potential umpires who might would try to become future MLB umpires, and maybe be top notch, 95% or higher (and yes i know, anything below 100% perfect you should just be fired, like all the other 350 million people out there that are all 100% perfect at their jobs and never make a mistake or they immediately get fired), ratings on both base judgments and plate judgments even without ABS and replay, but we will never know since they walk away early.
