They will get zapped on a evaluation if they don't move a certain way. Softball mechanics, they want them robotic as you say. Had a friend attend a ASA Clinic so he could start working softball and that is exactly what he said they want their mechanics Robotic.

Not needed here in Sunny Southern California :hi5:

Is it Sunday yet??????? Having games only on Sunday is making the weeks very long. Thank God for ClubWPT Online Poker.

Have you ever tried Aleene's Tack-It Over & Over Glue? The only Association patch I have to wear is for HS. I use it and never had a problem with a patch staying on. Once it is on, you can not even tell how it is attached.

I am confused We complain about the use of Instant Reply to change calls in a game, but we continue to tear apart Professional Umpires judgment calls by watching replays. :D
-
It was girls softball. She didn't TUG of the sliding players shorts while she was sliding by into the base.

We use patches here in California for HS. I use Aleene's Tack-It Over & Over to apply it to what ever shirt I use. We place it on the pocket. Some use double sided tape.

I had this exact call yesterday in my Adult Major Wood Bat game. When it happened, I said Damn, I just saw that video. :o

You mean they don't have to play their way in like they do for some USSSA Tournaments. They don't have to earn points by playing in Tournaments, State Tournaments, NIT's etc.

How does a EJ get stolen form you? Not going to argue your ejection, but this statement makes it sound like your hunting for them.

After 4 cups of coffee, I am now awake. ;)
-
I think I am either having a moment also or not enough coffee this morning yet. From what you wrote and how you wrote it, I think you blew the call. Would love to hear why the run didn't score? :question1:
-
Yes. But let the guys on the field do it. Not some guy watching slow mo, HD replay. Next thing is every team will have someone with a video cam wanting you to review calls.

WP believes in all volunteer umpires. You can't get paid to work games, but WP can make all the money they want. Now to thank them for their hard work and years of volunteering to get to the LLWS, they will embarrass them on National Television. Why would anyone put themselves through that.

After the headache coming back this morning and being told by several people to go to Doctor, I did. They took some xrays and did find a brain.. Doctor said I more than likely suffered a slight concussion and my neck is sore from a little whip lash. Said we passed the critical period since it happened Sat evening. He also said not to wait to come in next time. Rest a few days, take ibuprofen and as long as the head ache doesn't get any worse it should be gone in a couple of days.
-
Tried the mouth guard out. Stopped using it because I didn't think I needed it since I wasn't taking shots to the mask....lol. Headache has been fading throughout the day. Been resting and watching TV. Glad I had no games today. I haven't taken anything for it because I didn't want to mask anything. If there is anything lingering around Monday morning I will go in. I am pretty sure I had got a slight concussion. To stubborn to go to Dr unless I have to. If there are any remaining problems Monday morning I will go in.

Hope he did pay for parking because I am refusing to Validate for him...lol

I worked 2 games yesterday, 18U Impromptu 4 team tournament. 7 inning, 2 hour time limit. One Man Mechanics First game went without a hitch. Second game was Championship Game First 5 1/2 innings no problem. Bottom of 6th I became a ball magnet. Bottom of 6 Left hand batter, foul in the dirt. Get by the catcher and gets me in Right Thigh. Ouch. Hear coach tell catcher to go talk to pitcher. Top of 7 Right Hand Batter. Inside pitch, fouled. Smacks off throat protector and top edge of CP and gets a little bone. CP had slipped down a little. OUCH 2 Hear coach tell catcher to go talk to pitcher. Bottom 7 Right Hand Batter. Foul in dirt, between catchers legs, some how gets under Throat Protector and gets me in the throat...OUCH 3 Both coaches come out and make sure I am alright. Right Hand Batter Inside pitch, foul straight back. Hard straight on hit to mask. Damn OUCH 4 That one really rocked me. I here spectators say Game Over. Both coaches come out again to check on me.. One takes a close look at me and says your head really snapped back on that one. I gather myself again and PLAY. 3rd out is made and I step to the back stop to get some water and gather myself from the hits. I turn and see both teams coming out of dugouts to shake hands. I ask, Don't we have another half inning. Coaches say, no that was it. I am saying Thank God. I think I lost a half inning with the mask shot. Gear bag was in dugout since parking lot was a hike. Started stripping off my gear and one coach come to me and to see if I am alright. Yea, just got a nasty headache now. Get home, eat a couple of sandwiches and 800mg of ibuprofen for desert. Still have a slight headache located right in my forehead this morning. I have taken shots before, but not that many and not that hard, not only in one game, or even a day. But that many in a inning and half, I think the ball became magnetized to me. Before anyone asks, yes I was set up in the slot.

Calling a game solo by standing behind the mound
semper_fi_72 replied to benrosen's topic in Umpire Mechanics
Ros@ You have very valid points and we are glad to have you in the umpire ranks. Volunteering to work Little League is great. I believe Stan is talking about those guys who always seem to not have their gear with them. They are taking good pay to work games, yet do not invest it in gear as they should. They are LAZY and only want to go out there only to make some money. When I played ball in NY back in the late 60's all our umpires worked single man from behind the mound. I have done a couple of innings from behind the mound for a Little League Jr game. I had finished my games and took off my gear and was about to pull out of the parking lot. The umpire for the next game was running late and they grabbed me at the last minute. To get the game moving I worked from behind the mound till he showed up. Not to hard to call balls and strikes and you just have to be ready to move for the calls on the lines. As with working 1 man from behind the plate, you just get the best angle and distance you can and make the call. I would not want to do it on any regular basis. -
At the MLB level that does not warrant an EJ.

OBR 6.08 The batter becomes a runner and is entitled to first base without liability to be put out (provided he advances to and touches first base) when - © He is touched by a pitched ball............. So once he is HBP he is no longer a batter but has become a runner. His time at bat is over. Advance to 1B.

I usually don't put to much credence into the post game "You did a great job Blue" from coaches. Yesterday I worked 3 13U Games for USSSA Western World Series. Worked games with teams from Oregon, Arizona and a Local Team. Had plate for Game 1 OR vs Az and Game 2 Az vs Local Team. Oregon won 1st game, Local Team won 2nd game. Az lost both. As soon as last out was made in Game 2, partner heads to parking lot to get plate gear on for game 3. Oregon manager stops me as I am leaving the field and asks if we will start on time. I say yes, will be back in 10 minutes to start, just have to get plate gear off as partner and I are changing positions. He says, I was hoping you were staying on the plate, your calls were very consistent and had a good zone. While getting out of plate gear, Az manager who had lost both games and was parked a few spaces over came over to me while I was changing. He comes up and says Lou, appreciate your work. You were very consistent and had a great zone. Thanks for the great job and shook my hand. My partner was right there finishing getting his plate gear on. He then thanks my partner for the great job on the bases. My partner for the day was someone who has been and still does mentor me. I owe him a lot. He is also my assignor for Adult Ball and Legion Ball and has recommended me for several assignments. While walking back in I tell him the Oregon manager had also complimented me and wanted me on the plate. He replies you deserve it and that I did do a great job and was very pleased with the reports he was getting back from the leagues he assigns for. We complete the 3rd game with him on the dish and me on the bases. Oregon beat our local team 6-5. As we are leaving the field the Oregon manager again thanks us for calling a good game and tells his players "Give the Blues a round of applause guys". All the players start and saying good game blue. As my partner and I are walking back to the parking lot, we shake hands and agree we had a great day and a lot of fun. We didn't get a peep from any where on any of our calls, not even on a ball or a strike. Our on field communication/signaling was on and we did not miss a rotation. Including a drive down the RF line with no runners. Partner goes out, I pick up BR and take him all the way into 3rd for a stand up triple. Who is at HP, my partner. Perfect rotation. Also had R1 attempt to steal 2B. Throw comes down and it is close. I wait for the dust to clear, F6 comes up showing me his glove and I punch the runner out. Between innings I confer with my partner and he says that was a great call on the steal. He said I though I was watching a California League Umpire. Your timing and mechanic were great. The games were great and there were probably 5 or 6 plays that were highlight reel material. We worked on a replica field of Forbes Field and the fence is like 320. One hard, high hit ball to left center, landed on the warning track and bounced over the wall which is about 15 foot high. Nice shot for a 13 year old. Felt good to get the same compliment from the manager of the team who went 2-0 as well as from the manager who went 0-2 for the day. Especially when these teams have traveled the distances they did to play in this week long tournament. Yesterday will go down as being one of my favorite days on the diamond. Who says umpiring is a thankless unsatisfying job? :D

I do not do it but believe it will work. You are basically putting a protective covering over the metal. I don't have any corrosion problem with my gear. If you ever get chiggers, coat them with clear nail polish. It kills them. That I know works.
