With several of you having big games coming up and the HS post season starting up / winding down depending on where you are, what is the biggest crowd you've called a game for?

Well, I can certainly tell you the smallest crowd that I've worked before --14.

I worked a showcase one time and counted 37 in the crowd, maybe 3 scouts, and this was a deal with teams from as far away as New England area.

I worked a #1 vs #4 in the state once that probably had about 500 - 600 and it was just a regular season game.

I worked a Babe Ruth state championship once with a crowd of maybe 1,000 or so and that was a law enforcment estimate. They estimated it after we had to have them called in and they called in for reinforcements!

I've run the whole spectrum......

everything from 3 parents, a drunk and a cow....(no kidding),....the cow wandered in from an adjacent field....to PONY World Series of a thousands +...

And over the years I've seen some attendances come and go....a few years ago we had a pretty exciting Legion league that locally would attract a nice crowd (100+) every night...

and with the economy being bad, I expect a few towns will see a bump....local baseball is a good fun and cheap night out....

Ive done PONY league games of 50-75 parents, and HS games with less than 10.....did a D3 game with maybe 9-10 people total......weather in the spring can be a big determining factor.....

Hey, that wasn't me at that game.....but I'm not sure I remember, I was kind of drunk at the time.

Seriously, though, American Legion regionals was a fairly big crowd and very well behaved I might add.............although the teams were somewhat politely obnoxious. 2500+ seems to stand out in my head. Also, we had an excellent crew that didn't (from the crowd's perspective) help influence the game.

I called a Celebrity Game for a Dallas Sports Talk Radio Station. 5000+ at the ballpark, and, if you count the fact it was broadcast live, maybe 300,000?

Someday let me tell you all about the hot mom in the short denim skirt along the first base line that rested her feet against the chain link fence.............and had forgotten to wear a certain item of intimate apparel......

The most I've done is maybe around the 50 mark, if more maybe 60 tops. Always the BU though then. It's sad just how many parents don't show up to a district championship game let alone maybe a few family and friends coming by...

Heck, I have never been lucky enough to work in front of a cow.... First game of season was 1,400; was cool.... big rivalry, and had a ball. Underdog won, 1 to 0. Clean game and great pitching. Great catchers as well.

I've worked if front of about 13,500 people. It's pretty fun.

now thats a crowd....must have been a pretty nice stadium to hold that many...

I'm working the HS state championships tomorrow. It's the small schools division, so I imagine it won't be more than 100 or so, if that many. Other than that, I have worked Cal Ripken regional tournaments with, at most, 100 watching. It's kinda funny, because I never really pay attention to the size of the crowd, but prefer larger ones. That way the noise drowns out daddy/mommy/grandpappy know it alls in the stands, shouting things like, "Tie goes to the runner!" or my all time favorite, "Call it both ways, blue!"

Congrats on the choice game!

Thanks, Warren. I'm looking forward to it. The tourney is being held at a brand new college stadium where the entire infield is artificial, even the mound. It should be a lot of fun. I'll let you know how it goes.

My only question would be, did the cow ever display its anger over a call by dropping its sentiments around either liquid or solid based??

nah, I think she was only interested in getting a taste of the outfield grass....but the coolest part of umpiring in rural areas is that the farm kids/players didnt even blink...they just herded her back into her field with their gloves and we played on.....

Biggest crowd ever for me was in Venezuela...Caracas Leones vs. Navegantes de Magallenes (sp?) in 2002...

28,000+

In the US...St. Louis Cardinals vs. Memphis Redbirds...18,000+

Fun, Fun, Fun!

Little League World Series Championship Game this past August. I had the plate. 35,000+ on live ABC World Broadcast. Several others earlier during the tournament went 5,000. Before that about 2,500 on the Southern Region Championship game in 2005 also on the plate.
