Baserunning

Question

Posted

Runners on 1st and 2nd no outs. Ground ball to second, throws to SS for force out. Runner running to second does not slide nor touch SS, just stands in basepath about 2/3rds way to second. Umpire calls for double play for interference. Runner that started in second moved to third. Does that runner have to go back to 2nd base on the play?

Yes, on this type of interference (INT), no Runners may advance or score. So, R1 was put Out on force-out at 2B, but also committed INT; thus, the BR is also Out, and R2 must return to 2B.

Need more information.  How did the runner interfere with the play when he was 30 feet from second base? The answer to your last sentence is, "Yes."

No, somebody just needs to post the correct ruling on this play for the OP. R2 stays at 3B. Not me.
