Obstruction or Balk?

I think it's a balk...but I'm not totally sure. What says the hive?

This might be another balk for throwing to F3 off the base. This would be the third one recently where I had an obvious attempt to retire the runner but MLB umpires didn’t.

What are you asking? What did U1 call, or what could/should have been called?

Reading lips and body language, I think it was balk for too far off the base (especially given the hand away sweep motion at the very end wide shot). Personally I don't like it (I haven't liked the other two recents either. I may be in the minority).

OBS - possible. I couldn't see a good enough angle and R1 went straight back into the base (albeit the far edge) and I'd expect a demonstrative point.

I'm simply trying to figure out what was called. There's a case for a couple of things.

I'm placing my wager on F3 being too far away.  There was not obstruction and there was not a (pitcher) balk.

The announcers were talking about a 3rd disengagement, but I'm pretty sure a catcher's snap throw does not count as a disengagement.  *Pretty*Sure

Play by play is a Balk. I had a humorous discussion with Brennan on Refmasters about my opinion of an attempt to put out in the two previous balks. I came to the conclusion that if the deke succeeds it's not a balk but if they don't get the out it's a balk. My takeaway from Jim Evan's balk video might not be current in MLB today. Basically if you thought there was a play on it was not a balk.

How do you explain the various gestering?

I think the first pick was not a balk because of the more close tag. The second play had a more relaxed tag.

Starting with the slow mo of the call at 3:12, I interpret U1 right hand pushing across his body and head movements as "no, he's away". Then at 3:20 U1 right hand fisted and gesturing to the bag is saying "you didn't even try a tag"
