Doc Posted April 2 Report Posted April 2 Situation: runners on 2nd and 3rd (R3 & R2 respectively). 2 man crew. U1 in C position. F5 playing even with the 3rd base bag. Batter hits a low sinking line drive directly at F5 who takes a step forward towards home plate and short hops/traps the ball. Knowing that a prompt call is needed in this situation to eliminate any confusion, which umpire (PU or U1) is responsible for the "catch or no catch?". Obviously we don't want conflicting calls. noumpere Posted April 2 Report Posted April 2 Personally, I’d give it to BU, but it will depend on the specific mechanics being used. Quote

This is actually what I thought given the proximity and better angle of the play for the BU. Looks like the NFHS umpire manual says it should be PU. Thanks for the response. Quote
Doc Posted April 3 Author Report Posted April 3 Just as a follow up. The correct mechanic is found as listed above in the CAA and on page 70 of this year's NFHS umpire's manual that it is the responsibility of the PU if 3rd baseman goes backer. towards the line and it is the BU call if the 3rd baseman is moving towards home plate to towards the middle of the infield (towards the BU. Thanks to all that responded. Quote
BLWizzRanger Posted April 3 Report Posted April 3 Guys, take this with some perspective.... if the F5 runs up to catch a, say a bunted ball that was popped up, and the F5 has to dive for it to make the catch, the PU should probably take the call. I guess a general rule of thumb is maybe when the U1/U3 is in 'C', let the PU have everything in front of the mound. I think they have a better angle for it. Quote

My NFHS 2025-26 Umpire Manual says something different about the two man crew with runners on base Page 73 - Crew of Two: Runners on Base 1 Quote
SeeingEyeDog Posted April 4 Report Posted April 4 If you are ever unsure in a catch/no-catch situation...find your partner and lock eyes. One of you should tap your chest to indicate you are taking it. ~Dawg Quote
