LL JRs. R3, groundball to F6. R3 goes on contact and throw from F6 beats runner by 3 steps. F2 fields the throw with one knee on the ground completely blocking the plate and as R3 approaches, at the last second he jumps completely over F2 and the plate. F2 quickly tags R3 ( so he was out anyway } but my partner had already called him out on the jump.

After the game I asked him if he was sure about the play at the plate and he said sure he can't jump over a fielder trying to make a tag. I told him that was A HS rule and felt like the jump by R3 satisfied the attempt to get around requirement of 7.08(a). We weren't arguing, just a constructive conversation BTW. He said his concern was safety and felt like the runner should have been called out, so we agreed to disagree on that one.

So, am I right about this play and also what if it is the exact same play except that right after the jump F2 stands up and creates a collision and looses the ball.

Legal in LL rules.

From the RIM:

INSTRUCTOR COMMENTS:

> Hurdling or going over the defensive player that has the ball and is waiting to make a tag is a legal maneuver. Rule 7.08(a) (3) does not prevent or make hurdling illegal.

If the fielder with the ball stands up into the runner's path - play the bounce. The runner attempted to go around (met requirements) so no foul here. The fielder had the ball so no obstruction.

ALSO:

Legal in OBR.

Legal in NCAA.

Only illegal in FED.

Since Babe Ruth uses OBR is also legal? Or does Babe Ruth have a rule against it?

Just a bump for anyone calling Dixie youth baseball (in TX at least). It is illegal to jump over or run over a fielder trying to make a tag. We have a must slide rule. :big_no

Best to cite this rule.

I find it hard to believe that the rules require a runner to slide.

It might be one of those stupid Local Rules.

I know we have several parks that have a Must Slide into Home Plate Rule.

I am at work, but now I will for sure check my book when I get home. I was told this by the Umpire who did a meeting for the local league. So very possible its local, but I call several leagues so it will be good to know. I thought he said it was a state thing for Dixie.

It is not in the main Dixie book.It is either a local rule or state rule. Either way if it were my son and you required him to slide when not needed, I would sue everyone in sight. I despise people that sue for no reason, here you know that sliding is the most dangerous thing in the game to do and now you are saying he is required to do exactly that. Good luck defending that.

I wouldn't defend anything. I will make sure its in the league rules, if it is then its their battle. If its not then I wont call it. I agree with you and I will teach my son to not slide unless necessary when he gets older. I think I read somewhere that sliding causes the second most injuries in baseball, after getting hit by a pitch. I hate must slide rules... but he who signs the paycheck. :shakehead:

Variations on the theme of "must slide" have gotta be amongst the worst understood rules out there. I watched a very strange "double play" in a minors LL game . . . ump called out two separate runners for not sliding into home while the ball was in the outfield. *sigh* Sometimes volunteers are just still learning . . .

It's pretty simple for Little League. Slide, or attempt to get around a defensive player, IF he has the ball AND is waiting to make a tag.

That minors manager was equally at fault for not protesting the easily corrected call. There's usually some love to share on boneheaded calls like these.

Our league plays Dixie, and there is no must slide rule. We have a local league rule where they have to slide at home when there is a play... But its usually not a problem cause most if the kids slide anyway, guess they just line to get dirty.

I know gonna sound like an old timer , but theses avoid contact and slide rules are just BS , just play baseball!! Since all these so called "safety rules" started I have scene more runners hurt sliding , than "Posey" like injuries to catchers . Like stated early in the thread, sliding probably causes the second most injuries in baseball,

That's why I rail against "Must slide" rules that local leagues put in. I don't see how slide or attempt to avoid contact would cause more injuries. I agree that slides cause many injuries. What they are trying to do is avoid trucking players, and I am good with that.

This is what I don't get. If you are worried about players trucking players, put in a strong ban of malicious contact with a slide or avoid. Problem solved IMO.

Its safe.. not safe... either way I don't think a must slide rule is fair to the runner. If a catcher has the ball and is blocking the plate then a slide into the tag is a sure out (you would think anyway). So I would rather jump. My local league does not allow jumping over so the runner has to slide, or turn around and get in a run down. Although in 10U the catcher often just stares them back to the bag or overthrows the ball. But I understand the league wanting to avoid trucking. Even if I call MC on the runner if someone is injured then all I did was give the other team an out. As a coach I would rather have an uninjured player and let them have the run.
