Hi guys, come across this CP that Reed Basner is wearing, does anyone know what it is? It looks like a red CP, with maybe some black plastic protection with the sticker on it? Can anyone help me out?

Good question. I can't recognize it, but it looks lacking in the clavicle protection area.  The plastic looks low down off the clavicle in the picture.

Looks like it could possibly be a wilson gold with additional foam layer ... Maybe different shoulder pads as well?

Since he's Australian, I wonder if the CP came with him from there?

I don’t think he is from Australia. He is from Alabama.

I thought originally that this is it, but looking back at it, it is not.

Oops, where did I get Australia from?  There's a lot of similarities though!  Strange accent, it's very hot, they have lots of snakes... even have some nice beaches in both places!

I think Douglas will do custom color pad jackets too, but the plate looked too far down to be a Douglas and the neck roll looks different.

Ahem…

From the guy that wears the CP in question himself –

It’s an old Honig's K-2 from the ‘90s. Red obviously, but the only pictures I could find of one on the internet are like grey in color, I’ll see if I can find the pic.

But on top of that I had Velcro sewn into it to attach chest plates from a champion CP as the Honig's is [by nature] a soft shell.

@Chris Hickman, your posted picture and insight are dead-on.

Connections, gentlemen. Hit up the source.

Hey photo,  also seem it in black,  but not mentioned as the k2 cp

So basically no real rib protection there, just broad at the top,  narrow at the bottom... not sure if be ballast enough to wear that

I quoted the Umpire directly. I wasn't going to argue with him over text (even though I'm at a familiarity with him that I could) over the inaccuracy. As @Chris Hickman noted, it's a K1, not a K2.

The K2, as you point out, is a Fastpitch Softball CP. Honigs still sells it, as it is more than adequate for amateur (youth) softball.

This is the Honigs K1 –

In a sense, it is the ancestor of the Force3 UnEqual CP. In its first form, it lacked the shoulder ailettes, but it was secured with side release buckles (instead of T-hooks). Dick Honig (and/or his staff) was very much aware of the damage that torso impacts had on uniforms (shirts, etc.) and gear. Instead of going the "easy" way of replicating football pads, he encased the foam-backed plates in nylon. However!... before any of you astute colleagues go, "But Max! You're always extolling us about the wretchedness of (Wilson's) nylon!"... there's different qualities of nylon. Whereas Wilson (still) uses cheap-cheap-cheap tent-floor nylon, Honigs actually used a much more svelte nylon, like you might find on a camping jacket:

Well, wouldn't ya know it, enough guys complained about having to change out (busted) side release buckles that Honigs instead modified it to be an "embracing" pair of velcro straps. Which work, but eventually wear out, lose their grip, lose their elasticity, or get fouled by dust and dirt.

So yeah, they can be modified.

There was that stretch of time, though, that Honigs made their gear in atypical, noticeable colors, just like +POS and Carlucci.

Just for the sake of playing devil's advocate, I still say that is NOT a Honig's K1.  The hard plate showing above the open shirt neck is plastic, not covered in nylon.  Also, the neck roll material does not match the Honig's chest protectors shown.

I'm still NOT 100% on what it is - but I'd bet good money that it is NOT a Honig's CP... and I don't bet... ever.  :2cents:

You didn't read (thoroughly enough) what I posted... direct from the wearer himself:

There, ya see it now?

lol!😂

Okay, I’m blind. As an umpire no less!

I totally kicked it, guilty as charged. It’s been a terrible week… glad it’s ending.

I can see it now!

The K1 was my first "hard shell" protector. Fit great, super light, and pretty low profile. However, I took some hits with it in 12u games that I thought I shouldn't have felt as much as it did. I ended up selling it for $100 and at the same time turned that $100 around for a Weat Vest Gold that Gerry Davis was running a sale on at the time.

I still like the look of the thing. But I would never wear it unless I did the mods that Max mentioned.
