Watched this video this weekend, and I'm not sure the PU got it right. Sure, the batter swings the bat; is it really an attempt to strike at the ball?

So the question really comes down to this...

Hey Mr. Umpire who works for me and wants to move up the ladder to the next level. Why did you not call that a strike when the batter swung at the ball? What is wrong with you?

or

The answer to this scenario is do what your assigner wants, especially if you are hoping to move up the ladder and advance. The player, although most likely just trying to be funny just found out that not everyone has a sense of humor, and honestly, if the call was not made, the other team manager is going to have an argument with the umpire... No one wins here.

Agree with everything you said here. My first blame is on the batter for putting me in a dumb situation.

He struck at the pitch.

Nothing in the language requires it to be a legit swing, nor an attempt to hit the ball (many swings, especially at lower levels, are intentional misses to distract the catcher)

It being third strike in this scenario, what if F2 wasn't moving to the ball...the batter could do his faux swing and then run to first on an U3K as the ball rolled to the backstop.   He can't have it both ways.

In fact, the ump being on the ball likely knows this possibility.
