Tagging the beard

Gary, Keith, and Ron brought this up on tonight’s Mets broadcast: for the purposes of tags and hit by pitches, does a person’s beard or long hair count as part of the person, the way the jersey does, or is it more like the laces of the glove, where it doesn’t count if it’s the only point of contact?

A beard or long hair are as intrinsically part of the person as their arm, it absolutely counts for tags and hit by pitches.

I would count that the same as a jersey yes its a part of them. 

 

In LL when its cold if a kids wearing a hoodie I tell both coaches pre game I consider that hood a part of the uni  if it gets hit at bat they go to 1st if they get tagged on it they are out. same same..

I can only think of one organization that had hoods as part of its uniform, and I ain't working for them.

I think various rules over the years have been pretty darned clear that anything that "extends the body" should not be considered part of play.  Fastpitch softball codes explicitly ban toe-extensions ("drag plates" for pitchers.  Laces are not considered.

This is a sticky one, but you see the batter come to the plate with an EvoShield elbow armor.  The piece of equipment sticks out four inches from the bend in his elbow.  Are you granting a hit by pitch if it hits him in that section sticking out?  (Please skip the whole "I can't see where it hit" argument for the sake of this discussion.)

How about the sliding mittens?  Are we going to let runners attach ping pong paddle sized mitts to their hands to reach the base sooner?

I don't know some of these answers, but the questions are good for discussion.

Actually, they did have a team, but they didn't wear the hoods (at least not while playing).
