Bases empty count 2-2. Batter tries to check swing and is hit by pitch. PU rules K. At this point is it a Dead ball, a delayed Dead ball or just an ordinary D3K?

Dead ball.  Strike on the swing.  Batter out .. Runners return.,

Any time batter is hit by a pitch, the ball is dead. The next thing the ump has to determine is if the pitch was a ball or strike. If the pitch was a ball, the batter is awarded first. If it's a strike, he either stays at the plate or is retired if it's strike three.

Ha!  I wonder if this question comes from my district from which I ruled as TD on a protest on this exact play/question a couple of days ago.

Remember that the proper term is an uncaught 3rd strike as opposed to a dropped 3rd.

FYI Johnpatrick:

Not from your district, if your district is So. Cal. The question arose when after as described in the OP the batter then ran towards 1b, making the catcher think he was obliged to throw him out, which he did. There was no controversy. I just wondered if the batter was out on the throw or the swing.

Good point;  ball in the dirt is covered along with an actual dropped ball when using the term.
