I was taking a rules quiz online and came across this. I'm interested to see if this is an easy one for the group or a bit of a thinker.

"The batter hits a deep and high fly ball into the right field corner. The right fielder gets under the ball at the fence, near the foul pole. He is standing on foul territory. The fielder jumps and touches the ball with his glove while the ball is over fair territory. The ball deflects off his glove and travels over the fence on the foul side of the foul pole. Ruling?"

I would believe this would be a ground rules double. At least that is my thinking since it was touched in fair territory and left the field of play in DBT.

It actually is a rule book double in OBR and NCAA. In FED, it is a two base award by official interpretation. Here are two OBR that cover the scenario in the OP:

5.05 (6.09) When the Batter Becomes a Runner

(a) The batter becomes a runner when:

(9) Any fair fly ball is deflected by the fielder into the stands, or over the fence into foul territory, in which case the batter shall be entitled to advance to second base; but if deflected into the stands or over the fence in fair territory, the batter shall be entitled to a home run. However, should such a fair fly be deflected at a point less than 250 feet from home plate, the batter shall be entitled to two bases only.

5.06(4) (7.05) Each runner including the batter-runner may, without liability to be put out, advance:

(F) Two bases, if a fair ball bounces or is deflected into the stands outside the first or third base foul lines; or if it goes through or under a field fence, or through or under a scoreboard, or through or under shrubbery or vines on the fence; or if it sticks in such fence, scoreboard, shrubbery or vines;

The two above did not answer your question (instead, the answered the quiz about which you had the question).

The answer to your question is that this is an easy one.

It's easy when you know a few definitions, especially that of 'IN FLIGHT' and 'FAIR BALL.'
