Here's a question about BI mechanics.

You have announced loudly (I hope), "That's interference." and now your waiting for the results of the play. If the BI is nullified because the out was made on the runner, do you as a PU:

1. Step out with  a safe signal and announce that the BI is nulified due to the runner being out.

2. Announce the BI is nullified

3. Do nothing.

4. ?

I have two problems with this.

1) I point - with vim and vigor - and hold it till the end of the play - but I only "say" "That's Interference" loud enough for the 3 players near the plate to hear me.

Anything louder than that often kills the play unintentionally ... especially at the high school and below levels.

2) After the runner is retired, I absolutely say something ... "Interference is ignored."  Then I will explain if asked.

No players know this rule. 

Few coaches reeeeaaaallllly know it.

 

At the College level and up (bahahahaha) I would still do #1, not #2.

No one has stated anything that differs from your #1.

As for #2, HS coaches are going to want an explanation no matter what you say (or don't say) at the end of an ignored interference, so there's no reason to be combative with your "Seriously? Nothing?" intro.

Seriously, the OP stated the BI had already been called.  I personally will not hold my point that long, as in until after the the play at 2nd is concluded.  I also say it loud enough for all to hear.

And if the runner is retired I will say nothing. You should have already made a determination of a ball or strike.  Because it is a situation out of the norm I would update the count.
