Thrown Bat

Issue came up tonight, which wasn't a big deal, but one I questioned.  Is there a difference between a purposely thrown bat and one that slips out on the swing in a heavy rain?  FED...

It depends on judgment of what "carelessly" throwing the bat is to each individual umpire. If it's raining hard, I'd certainly give more leeway.

 

Of course, why are we playing if it's raining heavily though?

If it's raining so hard that bats are slipping out of guys hands, I'm calling the game. Especially FED where safety rules supreme.

Also, a purposely thrown bat is grounds for ejection. Carelessly thrown bats are warnings and subsequent violators on that team may be ejected.

It was a steady rain, no puddling, but a bit heavy at times.  We were going through balls like crazy.  I'm coaching this year, not umpiring school ball.  

Anyway, we had a big lefty come up.  He swung, hit a grounder, and the bat slips out and goes flying to the first base side on deck circle.  

Umpire immediately calls the out.  I think he grounds out there anyway,  but wanted to just get a question answered on if there is a difference in a purposely thrown bat and a bat that slipped because of rain.  He said it was a safety issue and any bat thrown was an out.  (My batter doesn't wear batting gloves)

We played just enough for a legal game and got out of there.  It was just beginning to puddle.  No other bats were thrown.

There is no "batter out" provision for a carelessly thrown bat in NFHS.  Just a team warning followed by ejection of the next offender.  He made up the out ruling or confused it with another set of rule codes other than NFHS.  The only time a batter is out under NFHS for a "whole" thrown bat is if the bat interferes with a defensive player making a play on the ball.

We have an out provision in our local rules code prompted by my tossing a U10 kid for repeated offenses (the last of which injured F2)

... you'd have thought that I was sending the kid to the electric chair. Next week we have the out provision

Safety first.

It is your responsibility to ensure all inside the fences are safe.

I will warn and eject after the second.

If I am questioned  on the ejection I reply " I had an unsafe situation"

If you are not backed up you are calling with the wrong group.

Even that is not an out for a thrown bat. It's an out for INT.

You could be more specific, and reference repeated 3-3-1c violations which, as you state, you have handled properly with first a warning and then ejection.
