I wondered if anyone has bought or seen the new Gerry Davis chest protector yet. I have been looking at it and thinking about buying. It looks like a great protector but I can't find any reviews from anyone that has bought it yet. Anybody know anything about it?

I think, like when I was talking to Jim Kirk about my Silver Diamond mask, its just so new that no one has tried it yet.

I say you could either be the guinea pig and get it or wait till closer to the end of the season and buy it when people have had a chance to post reviews.

I saw a review finally on Officiating.com by one guy who had bought the new DavisShield. He didn't think it was protective enough. Anybody else seen or tried this product yet?

Used it for the first time tonight! Freshman game (4 1/2 innings). Didn't take any shots off the CP, just shin and forearm.

This is my first time at the plate, so I can't give a comparison to other CP's.

After a couple more games I will report back how it feels.

send a pm to kylejt. he has one for sale on ebay right now.

It didn't sell for $75, so I'm going to give it to our LL program. It's a write off, and will

serve the lower levels just fine.

I guess I should have reviewed it AFTER the sale ended.:home:

I just bought one, once I take a good shot off the chest, I will let everyone know. I bought it because last year I had a "youth league" protector and the shoulder pads always sliped and sure enough I took a foul ball right off the shoulder where it wasn't protected. Didn't break anything, but I couldn't lift my arm for the rest of the night.

I am wearing the Davis shield and it is the thinnest CP ive worn. It is more flexable than the others protectors ive worn. I have yet to take a good shot off of it and im curious to see how it feels. I will update you when i take a shot off of it.

Here's a quick review.

I bought one when they first came out. It is very thin, and formed to my frame quite well. The velco adjustment are great, and you get dialed in within seconds. It's a bit wide in the collarbone area for me, and leaves me a tad exposed. It looks really cool under a plate coat.

My unscientific experiment: I use a baseball, drilled out and Gorilla glued on the end of a golf club shaft, for training purposes. So I tried on various c/p's, and had my son take a few swings at me (he really enjoyed this part). The baseline was my Platinum, which just chuckled at everything. My K1 absorbed most of the blows, but I felt a bit of concussion. My original WV and my Douglas laughed at shots too. Then I donned the GD. Shots to the upper body, were fine. But ones to the ribs WERE felt, and I did not care for it one bit.

I called the folks at GD, as I wanted to return it for lack of protection. They said it was worn, so it's unreturnable. Oh well.

Here's what I would suggest perhaps..

Call them back, MAYBE you might get a different person, give them your actual evaluation under combat conditions, tell them you would like to return it for lack of confident protection, or whatever term of your choice, and then, if they give you the "used, can't return it" lines, just inform them that you have and will post a review online (name all the usual umpire sites) for others to peruse this item so that they can make an informed decision on whether or not to purchase it for themselves...

You may get lucky and get a free, confidential return to them and your $$ back, based on your word of mouth statement...

Worth a try..

This is a huge disappointment because I was planning on getting this next year when I get a plate coat.. If I bought it, do you think I could mess around with it to add more padding to the mid-section? Or is it just not worth it?

Nate, have you had a chance to try on the West Vest Gold? I remember you saying that Platinum wasn't a good fit for you....

Yeah fits great.. still need to adjust it still..

Give it a little bit. You will get it. And if you have issues with the straps I recommend sewing them to where you like them or use a heavy duty tape.

Yep, I'm getting some athletic tape, my mom work at a college and she asked the equipment manager if I could grab some. I absolutely love the vest, it fits better than any other chest protector I've owned before.

I just let a rookie use my WV Gold (something i NEVER do) for a pony game we worked cause he was complaining about his pro-9 POS. I think we have another convert ladies and gentlemen.

Nate,

I'm not sure if you want to mess with extra padding on the GD. I do admit I wore it under my plate coat last week, and it looked pretty cool. (Well, as "cool" as an old guy in a plate coat can look. Wearing a loose fitting, long sleeved Under Armour shirt OVER the protector looks even cooler, though. Quite sleek.
