Are the LL umpires who umpire the LLWS getting one over on them by not getting paid? Look at all the money the LL is making from television, concessions, etc etc etc. Give reasons either way.

Supply and demand.  There are thousands of LL umpires that are willing to pay their own way to have an opportunity to work these games on ESPN.  Until that supply line dries up, there's no need for LL International to change.

You can't put a price on prestige, pride, glamour, etc......or at least those umps can't.    I think I'd do the LLWS for nothing as well, for all of those reasons and more.

They get paid just as much as the managers and coaches.

You can't ask them to volunteer all year then pay them at the WS. Sets a bad example.  LL runs on volunteerism. Keep it that way.

Don't want to work for free - go elsewhere.

The least LL could do is provide lodging.

They pay for lodging and some of the series' take care of many meals. It's not as bad on the umps as you may think it is.

@Woodiemiller ....

Why post this in "Ask the umpire"?

This should be in the Youth section .........

You're right Jeff. I moved it for him.

Then I don't really have any issue with it. I just interpreted "pay their own way" as LL doesn't cover any costs.

I don't believe they pay at CDP, and you get stay in barracks, with other men.

Plus, they take anyone at CDP. At least there's some sort of screening process with LL.

However flawed it may be.

For LLWS, the umpires receive lodging and a per diem stipend for meals.  This year, they added the travel stipend.  In addition, the umpires are provided with two hats, two shirts, and a pullover.  They may also be provided with additional gear from sponsors.  All of this, along with the prestige of working the LLWS, and I doubt you will find anyone who has worked it would say that got a raw deal!

It depends on the series (which age group), but some of the series get pants & shoes as well.
