Hi Andrew,...I've got one, and cant' wait to try it out. What I like about the pads is that they're comfortable, and feel substantial, but they don't pull on any facial hair (hadn't shaved the day I was messing with it) ...so that's really nice.

Also interested in seeing how it's coming along from Pete....

I have one too. It is a really nice mask at a very reasonable price. I have worn this for about 5 games now. I have in my bag in rotation with 2 other All Star masks. The mask frame is a single bar and is light but still feels protective. I beleive the total weight is around 19 oz.. with a conventional harness.

I agree with with TH that the microfiber pads are firm and comfortable. I have a short goatee and the pads do not grab my beard or the stubble if I have not shaven that day. I really like the videos of the testing protocol that All Star uses.

You two are leaning me toward getting one. I need a new mask, as my current one is at least five years old and it feels heavy as sin.

I was lucky enough to get the Magnesium for $32 and I love it. Just a week ago I took the hardest shot I have ever taken to the mask and it held up nicely. No dents or anything.

I have the Wilson 2-tone pads on it.

The pads on the All Star FM2000UMP are fine (although my personal preference is leather). The mask is light and comfortable, and the price is really, really good. The lab test video is also very impressive. This frame is shaped differently to place more of the surface of the pad in contact with your hat/forehead.

All-Star is an innovative company and this design is innovative, but I have some questions about the effectiveness of this design. I think I get the concept: more surface contact means a greater area to distribute the impact. So, where does the energy go? It is attenuated by the frame and the mask pads, then distributed on your forehead. Other masks that fit less snugly will transfer the ball's energy more acutely at one or two points.

A mask that fits tight against your head will have a hard time spinning. The spinning dissipates the energy, so less is transferred to your head, especially off-center blows that hit lower on the mask.

I saw your review when you posted it. I knew the mask had taken some strong shots in a lab environment, and I trust your opinion on gear. You had mentioned, though, that you weren't wholly convinced about the pads.

Because of the unique design, would other pads work on the mask? Does All-Star sell different pads that would fit it?

The answer is yes. I installed the Wilson wraparound pads from my A3009 and put them on the FM2000 frame. I sent photos to someone on this board. I can not recall who it was. I checked my folder and I do not have them. The fit was fine and it was a nice combination. It made me realize that it was the Wilson frame that I did like and not the pads.

I stand corrected. The review states, "The only reservation I have with this mask is with the pads." That is a misstatement. I should be more careful! The issue I have is in how the pads contact the forehead because of the frame design.

I have not seen replacement pads offered for the FM2000UMP. Your best bet is to contact All-Star directly.

I just tried the All Star LMX (vinyl/leather) pads to the FM2000 and they fit fine. If I get a chance I will upload the photos tomorrow. They shape of the top of the frame seems to have no impact on replacement of the pads .

i also have had the new all star mask since last October . it is my main mask , i really like the fit and performance . the LUC pads , are comfortable , i have used the mask in varsity HS and below . i have taken a few moderately hard shots , with no issues . i want to buy another set of LUC pads as well .

after you have worn the all star for enough gms . let us know what you think ? i have had the mask since last October , and think it is great . it fits my head/face and has taken several shots (varsity HS and below) with no issues so far . the LUC pads seem to be fine , with no issues either .
