Thanks @Thunderheads, I don't know how they got to bashing me on my Red Shirt, anyways our fall ball schedule is either 4 games or 3 games that's how the association I'm in does it.  I love umpiring so that's why I do it.

Back on topic...

For me 4 games is too much in a day. It has nothing to do with my age or physical ability.

This is what 4 games says to me.

  1. I'll be working lower age ball. My problem isn't necessarily the age of the players and their ability; it's the parents and coaches. I've found the lower the age bracket the worse the parents and coaches are.
  2. Time. At a minimum 4 games is looking like 6 hours on the field, but realistically 7+ hrs then add in the drive.
  3. Because of #1 my attitude is not very pleasant by game 4.
  4. Even if I were in tip top shape AND kept a good attitude; by game 4 I'm probably not be performing at a level an umpire should be.

That's my opinion, you may feel differently.

But to the greater point.. Yes, it is a great feeling to get back on the field, especially after a long absence.

Some of the guys I have worked with... I'll trust my fatigued state of mind 4+ games into a day before I yield a game to one of them completely fresh

No problem ...either do I.   It's not like what was said was over the top and personally offensive, ...it just doesn't belong in a post like this and takes away from its nature.

I'm assuming, like most Fall Ball ......it's only once per week, and its' only for about 4 weekends or so ........  enjoy it!  The autumn doesn't last forever!

@JasonPalo, the "grumpies" as you say are the same folks that rag on a guy (ahem) for wearing a Father's Day sky-blue wristband after his brother recently became a father.

I'd rather see you wear Red than Navy. I'd rather see you wear Pink than Navy. I loathe Navy _that much_.

To the east of you here in Wisconsin, we're doing the same thing. Jamming as much fall-ball baseball as possible on Saturdays and Sundays. As an umpire, I live for these days. These games are 18/17U "club ball" – high school age teams pooled together from the strictly baseball participants or escape-the-ire-of-the-powermongering-football-coach guys of gutted-by-football travel ball teams, and I purposely snatched up the 4-game sets on the only lit field available to us, just so I get to call "the last game in town", under the lights. I will almost bait my partner into "burdening me" with the plate for the last game just so I get to wear MLB Black and spark the lights. These game sets start at noon and end around 10pm. If they crammed 1-2 more games in there, I'd still do them all. Heck, I've been known to stick around at tournaments and form a three-man crew with two guys that I know, just to keep umpiring on a day. I'm there, I love baseball, I have two working legs, I have breath in my lungs (thank the Lord), bring on the games.

Plural.

Before the snow starts falling. Which, being Wisconsin (and as I've said many many times here) could be any minute.

Max I have a double standard. I assign games for the local Pony League as well as a High School Summer and Winter Ball League and I have told the guys they will work a maximum of 3 games in a day whenever I can pull it off. The diminishing returns is not fair to the kids. That being said, I went out and worked 35 games in 8 days for a college tournament at the end of July. There were 3 days of 5 games and the rest were 4 games per day. But then I believe me at 70% Is still better than some of the umpires in this area. If you can work them and feel good working them, then by all means, work as many as you can. When game 4 is too tough to to and you hate being out there, don't cheat the kids or the game. Just my opinion.

Ok, if I offended you by my comment, I apologize.  It was simply a little ba!!-busting, which, as an umpire, if you don't engage in, you won't get very far.  In fact, if you're a newbie, you should EXPECT it.  It's like ritual hazing, without the sexual abuse...

I LOVE 4 games in one day, but only with a break between.

I do lots of tournaments where they want to schedule SIX on a single field.  We take 3 guys and rotate, so each works 4.

Plenty of greedy fools want to work all 6...that's just asking for trouble.
