I have heard from a contact that the NFHS rules changes are out.  I know what they are but no time to post the changes -- but if they are out someone else can post them or the link.

Not much there to speak of in major changes

I think backswing INT is a significant improvement. The press release does not mention the penalty for backswing INT, but I'd guess it's the same as OBR.

And the foul ball definition has been revamped to conform to OBR's.

That's true Maven. It will be nice to have some clarification on that point.

i just meant there is not sweeping changes or anything.

It is nice to have FED get closer to OBR in certain respects.

Why in the world would they change 'backswing interference' to mean something completely different?

Keep terminology consistent. When you start using the word 'interference' with something as simple as contacting F2 (or his equipment) before TOP, then you're going to have issues with Smittys calling batters out.

Ridiculous

Was there some epidemic of batters hitting catchers before time of pitch and interfering with a play somewhere? I've not only never seen that, I've never heard of it.

No -- but there was no specific FED guidance on what to do when B1 "waggles" his bat and then lifts it into hitting position and hits the catcher's glove as part of this.

I guess not enough umpires had the common sense to call time and start over, so FED decided to make it clear.

It mimics the NCAA and OBR accepted rulings.

There was a case play that addressed the B hitting F2 before TOP. Write a clarification in the definitions of the rule book, don't rewrite the whole section. My main concern is why shuffle definitions around? Now backswing INT in FED and OBR are completely different definitions. Edit: I do understand that backswing INT has no true definition in OBR Rule 2. My definition terminology stems from what is understood in 6.06 CMT.

I think they're talking about when a hitter is getting set in the box and his "backswing" contacts the catcher's mitt.

I'd bet that there are guys out there who were calling BI on that.

My thoughts exactly.  Long live Smitty!
