Interesting, because I've worked a few games with Ted's son who is a great kid and a very good umpire. He went to the Air Force after HS and told me he plans on beciming a professional umpir.

Interesting comment.  I'm curious why you called it "disturbingly powerful".

 

My son's, then 12yrs, first MLB game was at Turner field in 2012 during Chipper Jones' last season.  It was the MIA@ATL game that ATL went into with a magic number of "1" for a wild card spot.  Top of the 9th the Braves are trailing by one run and Kimbrel goes in to hold the 1-run deficit.

 

I don't think you got to see Kimbrel pitch in your series but his entrance is also a "powerful" experience.  (Insert your own adverb)  All of the video screens and video strips show "Kimbrel" spelled out over flames while Welcome to the Jungle blares from the speakers as Kimbrel jogs out from the bullpen.

 

Kibrel held, as he usually does, so we reach the mid-9th with the Braves still training by 1.  During the commercial break they play a video on the jumbotron with gladiator-like clips inter-spaced with clips from big walk-off Braves' wins.  The video ends with a voice-over saying something like, "We've done it before, we can do it again, if you Chop.  This.  House!" as the music transitions to the chop music.  Pretty powerful stuff.

 

Chipper lead off the inning with a stand-up double to the gap in center-right.  Freddie Freeman is up next, and is known for hitting the first pitch, but the first pitch is in the dirt and past the catcher.  Chipper moves up to 3B on the WP.  After another pitch, or two, Freddie lines one over the "400" sign in center field for his first career walk-off home run.  You've probably seen the video of Chipper skipping down the 3B line to score with one first held over his head--they've used that clip many times.  Obviously, big celebration, interviews, video from the locker room, team back on the field for more celebrating and interviews, etc.  I don't think we left the stadium until about an hour after the last pitch.

 

On the walk up the hill to our hotel my son says, "That was the second best Braves game ever!"

 

"Second best?  What was the first?"

 

He looks at me like I must be brain damaged, or something, to ask that question and says, "Game 6 in the 1995 World Series when they won the Championship!"  Of course, that was five years before he was even born!

 

They Turner Field folks do a good job putting on a good show for the fans.  Just never thought of it as "disturbing"!
