Bottom of the 3rd inning HT is up to bat R3 on. 2outs and batter has 3-2 count. Ball comes in and gets the lower outside corner so i call him out. Inning is over no problems, then the first base coach comes and talks to me. Since i know him, he used to be my baseball coach,we start talking. The first thing he says is "you cant be missing those low pitches bud. That was way too low." I stop him right there and say "Chris i dont want to hear it u need to go back to the dugout."
He then says "u cant be missing those that was below his knee." As hes saying that im repeatedly saying "chris thats enough i dont want to hear it" he then says " Bernie you need to know ur strike zone." Thats when i said"Chris Your Done!" And gave him the heave hoe. He went irate since i was closer to the vising side of the fence no one knows what is going on on the home teams side. He swearing at me saying " your a F#%@ing terrible umpire your a kid, you have to listen to me" thats when the manager comes and pulls him away and wanted to see what had happened. I explaned to him and told him what had happened. He understood apologized and went to the dugout. And i hear the coach still chirping as he goes to the dugout. HT won that game 6-4.

Should i have done things differently? Any tips?

One warning only unless the second one is to put him in the dugout prison (if available), otherwise toss if he persists. Also assistants don't get much rope even if you know them.

Although seeing his reaction I think he wanted to watch the rest of the game from the wonderful seat in the parking lot. Bad on the manager to not catching on sooner to get him out of there.

Great Job!  That is a good show of integrity on your part to perform your duties aside from any personal feelings you may have.  In your situation, he probably felt entitled to tell you what you were doing wrong in his opinion based on the fact he was your coach before.  It's a struggle that you will have being younger and dealing with adult coaches; some will have trouble with you exercising judgment and authority over the game.  Just keep in mind that as a younger umpire (or any age for that matter), it's easier to get adults to do what you need them to do when it doesn't sound like you are directly telling them what to do.  When pride takes over for adults, we can become extremely stupid.

Now don't get me wrong, he had no business arguing balls and strikes and you were in your rights to direct him to the dugout; however, instead of saying, "Chris i dont want to hear it u need to go back to the dugout.", you can send the same message by saying "Chris, I hear you and I know you disagree with that one, but we can't discuss balls and strikes, alright.  Now let's get this game going. (in a relaxed tone - especially body language)"  You acknowledged his complaint, you aren't telling him what he can/can't do, and you are not showing him up; however, you are sending the same message that discussing pitches is verboden and will get him nowhere.  Plus, the biggest thing is that it gives him the chance to WALK AWAY.

Now, if he doesn't take the hint and walk away, becomes indignant, or breaks any of the 3 P's at any point, then you do what you have to do.  It's a lot easier to write the EJ report and/or tell the TD that you tried to let him walk away, but hey:

"If Chump don't want the help, Chump don't get the help!"

And read "Verbal Judo"! It will change your life!

It is hard to ump games where you have former players, coaches or friends on the team. They seem to think they can get away with things cause they know you. I tossed a friend I knew one time and it was hard to do but after I realized he was not a friend cause of the way he acted.

2 great points (to paraphrase from above).

1) stay the hell away from base coaches - if they are coming your way, go get water and make them follow you.  Don't allow them to get their cheep shot in as they walk past.

2) I'm a big advocate of "we're not talking about balls and strikes today."  It's stern (and will register as a warning to anyone with any level of experience) but is not going to embarrass the guy.

That said, this guy was a prick and absolutely deserved to be tossed.  If he was your coach, and is presumably much older than you, he's a pretty terrible person for trying to lobby calls out you IMHO.
