Question

Posted

Batter runner hits a bunt down 3rd base line. F1 picks up the ball and throws to F3 who catches the ball into 3-foot line, and tags BR just a few feet before 1B. At the moment of the taf, BR runs into F3 with elbows up and F3 drops the ball. I don't think BR wanted to make contact, but most ptobably protected himself from the contact with F3...

So ?

Intent is everything. If, in your judgement, he wasn't trying to dislodge the ball, and if there was no maliciousness, then the right call is no call. This is what we mean when we say 'train wreck.' Incidental contact with no intent

You could have any of 4 outcomes on this play, and as others have suggested it is umpire judgment which is correct. We'd need video to provide info about that.

  1. If the BR's contact with F3 is legal and dislodges the ball, then you have "No tag!" and a BR who is safe at 1B. You don't mention whether the BR touched 1B, but the potential missed base is a distinct issue. Live ball, play on.
  2. If the ball came out before the tag attempt, you might have OBS here, especially if the contact caused the BR to miss 1B.
  3. If the BR intentionally tried to knock the ball loose, then that's INT. The ball is dead, the BR is out, and other runners return to their TOP bases.
  4. If the BR intentionally brought his elbows up in a malicious manner, that's MC and INT. The ball is dead, the BR is out and ejected, and other runners return to their TOP bases.

what's hard to tell, it's if the contact was intentionnal or not...Hard to tell if BR protected himself from the contact or ran into F3 who was in possession of the ball. Without video (sorry, yesterday was a Major League Bretagne game, not a Major League Baseball game..^_^ ) , i will never know ......

Thanks guys !!!

I like to refer to this play as one of those "you had to be there" plays.

No way anybody can judge intent from this scenario as described in writing.

Ducking, dropping the shoulder, crossing the arms all could be seen as simple defensive reflexes...or they might be INT/MC.

See it, see it ALL, wait for the dust to settle, then make the call...even if it's NO call.
