Not that it should surprise too many people here, but it's usually pretty interesting listening to the White Sox commentary. Hawk says at least once after Girardi comes out to question that he thought the runner should have been out for leaving the base path. Then as Ventura's spleen finishes being vented he refers to the call as BS and then immediately saying the call was right.

It must be hard to lose an argument when you switch back and forth between both sides of it.

We get the luxury of seeing replays, but does anyone NOT see a tag attempt and the ball in the throwing hand of the defensive player?  Wouldn't that make the runner SAFE?  In real time, this is hard to see but after watching it a few times the defender barely makes an attempt at a tag not to mention the ball is in his throwing hand and not in his glove.

im all honesty, I completely agree. I never see an actual tag attempt. There was a QOC challenege made in the leqgue but once again, it wasnt from someone actually IN the league.

There was a fielder with the ball who was going to tag him. He ran more than 3 feet out of his base path to avoid being tagged: he did not know that the fielder would turn too late to tag him. The runner deserves no benefit from his ignorance: he was running wide in order to avoid being tagged, and that's an infraction.

 

Correct call, IMO.

 

Former players typically hate our "get it right" philosophy: they're generally old school and expect umpires to make a call and stick with it. But either way, if it goes against their team, it's "wrong." Yawn.

So, how far into right field does he have to chase a guy and what constitutes an attempt with the runner in right field. The runner will score every time if you have to chase the guy to the right field wall.
