Varsity game last night.  Cruising along with a pretty good game between two decent teams.  Felt like my zone was good and I was tracking the ball really well.  Bottom of the 5th, new pitcher for VT, throws a 55-footer and it catches me in the bicep.  Ouch! But life goes on. I hear from the VT dugout: " good block Billy!"  (I'm not Billy).

Next batter, another 55-footer fastball, another shot, this time to my thigh that also gets the Nutty Buddy.  Ouch!  "Good block Billy!"   (Again, I'm not Billy)

We get to the bottom of the 6th, and yup, 55-footer bounces up and catches by forearm.  Ouch, Hell!  "good block Billy!"  Billy turns to me and says "Boy, those pitches sure are bouncing funny".   Yeah, sure are, Billy.

Got a couple of sore places this morning.  :violin:

If there are runners on base and the ball hits me and catcher can recover it quickly enough to prevent runner from advancing I tell the catcher "you're welcome."  Batters usually laugh at that one.  Catchers don't for some reason.

I am a DICK sometimes.

Good job Billy...ah, I meant @refump10

I've had the privilege of helping out an F2 also. It's funny how coaches can spot the subtle difference between a close strike and ball from the dugout, but haven't the foggiest notion that those bouncers are going *past* Billy.

Last Friday I answered assigner's call for umpires needed at a rural school 87 miles away.  I get there, no partner.  Call assigner- no partner found.  Speak with host school AD, he has a local "might be certified" guy who he has a call in to, no partner.  Game time-no partner.  Varsity Dish alone-woohoo!

Visiting team catcher lets second pitch go by hits me directly in cup (UnderArmour-Recalled one) and inner left thigh.  Ouch!  Second batter, another inside pitch he does not glove, hits me in left side of rib cage just on edge of my baby sized WV Gold.  Ouch #2!  Third batter, ball bounces (inside pitch again) and up into my left hand/wrist locked in behind my left wrist. Ouch #3!  At this point the catcher says, "Sorry blue, I've never caught before."  I tell him "That's pretty freaking obvious."  I then modify my plate stance to almost directly behind him with my hand on his back so I can push him left or right to block inside/outside pitches.  (Yes! I did that.)

I take FIVE more hits from bouncers and foul balls in various parts of my body.  Two in arms (one each) and three total in Mask, chest, shoulder where at least there were pads.  Game was not close nor did I have any close plays other than a pick off at first where I banged the runner from home team without any argument.  They were up 7 or 8 runs and kid was dancing off the base like in the movie Rookie of the Year.

Damn!  I took a beating that night.

Fast forward to this past Monday, Email from REFPAY with notice of deposit.  School paid me my game fee plus half of other no-show umpire game fee.  Sort of made it better but I will never accept games at either of those schools again.

I took a "55 footer" right square in the Nutty Buddy last night as well.  Two batters later, a foul ball hits a field light and it explodes showering the score table and the home team on deck circle.  It made that very distinctive POP sound you hear when a light bulb breaks.  I joked with one of the assistants about how similar the two sounds were (me getting hit in the NB vs. the light breaking).  We had a good laugh.  NB preformed flawlessly by the way!

LL ump in our local league last night hit in the throat on a foul ball. He was wearing a throat guard but it hit just to the right of it. I hope this means it missed his larynx. Luckily, one of the parents who was there is a doctor. Taken away by paramedics. Waiting to hear on an update of his condition.

I wasn't there, so don't know any more details.

Anyone cheer that the umpire got taken out?  Wouldn't surprise me.

LL, no thanks.

Don't know since I wasn't there, but that would flat out shock me for our local league.  Mostly good folks there.  Contrary to the opinion of some, LL doesn't make jerks out of people.  People are jerks all on their own.

Got an update from the UIC on this umpire's condition.  He was released from the hospital last night around midnight.  He is still wore with some vertigo and nausea, but he is home.  He was struck in the carotid artery.

I think I might have developed a concussion and had to leave.

And they should have paid you both game fees, not a game fee and 1/2.

I wish this guy well, but this seams to be a mis-fitted CP, yes?

I know of no CP that covers the carotid artery in the neck.  I think it was just a "magic bullet."
