Dave is the DH for first baseman Fred in the clean-up spot.  In the middle of the game, Dave doubles and Sam (a legal Sub) pinch runs for Dave; therefore the DH is gone for the rest of the game. Sam, however, stays in the game and plays first base. I believe Dave can reenter but only as a sub for Sam. But can Fred reenter before Dave does?  Or is Fred out of the game...and why?

There is a similar case book example, but not this exact one. I think the answer will be the same as my previous post...I just don't know why.

Dave and Fred are both starters and both have re-entry elgibility. Doesn't matter if Fred re-enters first or Dave re-enters first. Once either Dave or Fred re-enter, Sam is done. The sequence off the starters re-entering has no bearing on their elgibility to re-enter.

Pops,

1. A pinch runner for the DH does NOT terminate the DH role.

2. The pinch runner staying in the game AND playing defense DOES terminate the DH role.

3. Both Fred and Dave (who were both starters) retain their re-entry privileges, and they are independent. The coach may re-enter them in whatever sequence he likes, but they are both constrained to the clean up spot.

Also, Sam entering as a pinch runner for Dave does not eliminate the DH in that situation. Sam would simply be the DH for Fred.

This is not correct.  The DH can be pinch-run for, and it does not terminate the role of the DH.

Now the DH is terminated.

This is correct, sort of.  He can only re-enter in the spot in the batting order that Sam currently occupies.  If another legal sub comes in for Sam, then Dave can re-enter for that player as well.

Both are starters and can re-enter, but are locked in the same position in the batting order.  It doesn't matter who re-enters first.

This rainbow color scheme is far out man!

I agree with all of the comments regarding the reentry of Dave and Fred. I never knew this could happen, so thanks for enlightening me.

And the issue of whether or not a DH can continue was clarified as well. I re-read the end of 3-1-4 where it says, "The role of the designated hitter is terminated for the remainder of the game when: the defensive player...for whom the designated hitter batted, subsequently bats, pinch-hits or pinch-runs for the designated hitter..."

In my OP, I had the sub running for the DH which is totally different.  Thanks for setting me straight.

Incorrect.  Sam is now the DH.

(sorry -- didn't see all the previous posts -- didn't mean to pile on)

@Pops,

So, have you joined an association?

JM

Yes. We get all our HS games and youth ball from schedulers in our association. They also support us with clinics and other educational meetings. Of course it costs us $35 to join, but well worth it.

When you have 300-400 officials, you don't have to charge that much to run the organization.

Last time I worked in a HS association we had over 350 umpires and we paid $70 per season. So your fees are a bargain...

You can work as much or as little HS ball as you want. I currently have 33 games scheduled thru the end of May, but we'll have 10-15 canceled due to weather.

I belong to another local association for a youth league with the same dues, same options for summer/fall games.
