Ooh, I feel like Lebron with that title.

 

In the past couple of weeks I've decided a couple of things regarding my future plans… I've told my family, and some close friends, so I figured I would share it with you guys (and gals) now.

 

I will be attending one of the two professional umpire camps in January of 2015. 

 

I will be spending the year of 2014 preparing for this in multiple ways. Physically, I'm going to get into shape. I've lost 20 pounds in the last couple months and currently come in at about 5'10/210 pounds… I'd like to lose at least 30 more pounds. As far as my life situation goes, I am on pace (if everything goes as planned) to achieve an Associate's degree following the Fall 2014 semester, prior to my 20th birthday.

 

Umpiring wise, I will be the Umpire in Chief of my local Little League for the 2014 season. I will be evaluating and training on Monday's and Wednesday's, and umpiring on all other days except Sunday… I will be putting all monies made via umpiring into the savings account. I have enough as is to pay for either school (including travel), but still need money for additional camps and clinics.

 

Regarding additional camps and clinics, I will be attending as many as possible without breaking the bank… I MAY attend a Little League clinic in January, I plan on attending the SEMUC clinic in February, and I hope to attend the MAUC clinic in September… I plan on also going to CDP for at least one, and possibly two weeks.  

 

I haven't yet decided which professional camp to attend, but I know I will be attending as an attempt at the dream so to speak. I won't come in with arrogance, but I will give it all I have... I figure, best case scenario, I'm living the dream for as long as I possibly can. Worst case scenario, I come back home with one hell of an experience and knowledge that will last me a lifetime. I then start college at a four year university in Fall of 2015.

 

If anyone has any tips, advice, other information, anything at all, PLEASE let me know. I appreciate all help. Should be a fun year!! :D

As an update...   I have officially enrolled for the 2015 Wendelstedt School! I'm excited!!

Really cool to hear this! I am going to TUS in about 3 weeks, and would love to give you some advice and tips. I have also gotten great advice from Haid D'Salaami and lawump on here.

Now the only decision is taking my talents to Vero Beach or to Daytona Beach!! Lebron can have South Beach.  :wave:

One piece of advice I can already give you... get the PBUC red book now and start going over it. It lays out the 2-man system in extreme detail, and you will have to know it cold for school. Also, once the 2014 version of the PBUC umpire manual comes out, get that and go through it. This advice was given to me by a guy who went to TUS in 2013 and graduated with honors.

One piece of advice I can already give you... get the PBUC red book now and start going over it. It lays out the 2-man system in extreme detail, and you will have to know it cold for school. Also, once the 2014 version of the PBUC umpire manual comes out, get that and go through it. This advice was given to me by a guy who went to TUS in 2013 and graduated with honors.

 

I got it last year. I've read it, but not really studied it. I will be studying the 2014 version.

I wish I had a plan like this when I was young. I had a thought, then life took over. Now I am trying to get back on track. It was so mich easier then...

I went last year and I know what you're talking about. To be honest, I treat it as more of a fun vacation of umpiring than a learning experience. There are some there who you can learn from, but it's a matter of finding that diamond in the rough because usually the ones who know something AREN'T the ones vocal about knowing something.

 

At breakfast one day, someone was going on and on about this situation they had in a game (not in the week)... He had TOTALLY screwed up the rule. I tried correcting him once, he shot me down, I just let him ramble...

 

Another situation, I happened to go out to dinner with a guy who roomed with my crew chief. While we were all talking, I mentioned my Little League program, and out of nowhere, I found out he ran a very good Little League program in Pennsylvania... I was able to pick his brain a little and gain some valuable information and tools that are going to help me run my program this year.

 

I do plan on going, but I plan on being very smart and cautious about taking anything back with me.

Best thing I brought back with me was the expeiences I had and an exchanged pair of West Vest Pro shins.

CDP is great for watching what other umpires do from other parts of the country. Sometimes there is stuff you can take back with you. Other times there are personal reminders of stuff you NEVER want to do. Either way it is a blast and a learning situation.

(On the down side, I also brought back a pretty bad sunburn. The week I went saw the hottest temps that area had seen in over a decade!)

Since you are looking to attend school in 2015, let me suggest that you try to attend a MLBUC (Major League Baseball Umpire Camps) sponsored clinic. These Clinics are usually one day or weekend clinics where you get basic instruction usually from MLB staff umpires and or Minor League umpires. From these clinics the usually offer scholarships to high potential umpires to their 1-week camp that is held in November. The instructors at this camp usually includes 4-10 MLB staff umpires. The lead instructors in the past have been current PBUC staff/instructors. From this camp the top students are usually offered scholarships to The Umpire school and Harry's. So this could be a great opportunity for you to have your schooling paid for. Worse case you would have at least some exposure to PBUC teaching concepts and staff.

/DON'T/ run stairs until you puke, that means you really messed up your hydration levels. I will go with the backpack with weights as pretty effective way to make it hard again. (And throw out your back if you're not careful.)

Go ahead and puke. It's good for the system.

Ha! It may be good for the system, but it crashes all adeneline and it sure isn't good for motivation. I've thrown up a few times running laps for wrestling and it is not the best way to keep your spirits up.
